City Held After Scoring Twice

Saturday 7th December. T
Swindon Town 2 Exeter City 2.

Consequent upon the non-success of the City in the Cup-tie at Cardiff, the management revised their team plans of last week, and the players who had carried the club to near the top of the League table were relied on for the important visit to Swindon. The only actual change, therefore, forgetting the Cardiff match, was at centre-forward, Brooksbank coming in vice Rutter, who was unfit. Swindon, top of the League, regarded Exeter as something of a "bogey", for the Grecians had surprised them at the County ground in each of the last two seasons, and had also knocked them out of the Charity Cup. The Railwaymen were forced to include reserves in the places of Bown and Walker, who were both injured.

SWINDON TOWN:
Skiller Kay Woolford Tout Silto Handley
Jefferson Wheatcroft Burkinshaw Batty Lamb

Referee:- Mr P.Sant, of Barnsley.

Linesmen: Messrs E.E.Small and J.H.White.

EXETER CITY:
Pym, Hurst Fort Lockett Pratt Rigby
Ives Crompton Brooksbank Cooper Whittaker

Playing on their own ground before 6,000 spectators, Swindon could only manage to make a draw with Exeter. For just over half an hour in the first half Swindon exerted a practically constant pressure upon the City goal without commanding a lead. Then the City retaliated with a series of passes, and the Swindon halves

essayed a round of backward touches; one of these went astray, with the result that Brooksbank was left with the ball at his foot and the goal yawning before him. Of course he scored, he could hardly avoid it. Then a really curious incident occurred. Kay, twenty-five yards from his own goal, lobbed the ball back to Skiller; the goalkeeper ran forward to take it, slipped and fell, and a crowd of players looked on wonderingly as the ball slowly trickled over the line just out of reach of the prostrate custodian. Thus were Exeter two goals to the good in thirty-three minutes. Naturally, these mishaps put Swindon completely off their game, and play was decidedly of a scrambling nature until the interval, before which Burkinshaw managed to reduce Exeter's lead with a dashing effort.
Half-time:
EXETER CITY 2-1 SWINDON TOWN
Second Half.

By way of recompense Swindon enjoyed two pieces of good luck in the second half, once quite early, when a magnificent shot by Whittaker struck the crossbar and bounced over, and later on, when the same player had even more exasperating misfortune with another effort, when the ball, swiftly shot, clearly beat Skiller, and came back into play from the side of the goalpost. These two occasions, plus two superb pieces of goalkeeping by Skiller in defeating the fine efforts of Brooksbank and Whittaker, were the only times that the City came near to scoring in this half. Swindon obtained one further goal, Tout converting a penalty, given against Lockett for tripping Wheatcroft, and a fast and exciting, but often scrambling, game, was as stated.

Last season: City 1 Swindon 0.
In 1910-11: City 1 Swindon 0.

Notes on the Game.

During the past two seasons the City have sprung a surprise on Swindon, beating them each time at their own ground, and they came very close to repeating the dose again today. Swindon Town must count themselves as very fortunate in halving the points, though it takes a certain amount of spirit and determination to draw
level after being two goals behind. In this game Swindon's tactics were altogether unsuited to the occasion. The ball was kept too close and held too long, and this on a wet surface against opponents who hustled and tackled with any amount of energy and enthusiasm. Exeter exhibited little of the science of the game, but they quickly made ground and forged ahead regardless of consequences, and it was their speed and dash and the way they swung the ball around that had an unsettling effect on the Railwaymen. Late in the game Pratt was injured in a collision with Silto, and played the remainder of the match on the right wing.

DEVON SENIOR CUP,
SECOND ROUND.
City Reserves v Oreston Rovers.

At St. James's Park. The start was delayed for 20 minutes, owing to the late arrival of the Oreston team. In wet weather on a heavy ground the City were far too good for their opponents, and after Addicott had secured an early lead Willats shot another goal, ten minutes before the interval. Exeter had an easy passage in the second half, and obtained five goals through Addicott, Jones, Willats, Arscott, and finally Willats.
Result:
City Reserves 7 goals, Oreston nil.

Reserves: - Chapman; Nevin, Hunt; Clarke, Lagan, Mullineux; Arscott, Lewis, Willats, Addicott, and Jones.

Rovers: Edwards; Wordley, Elliott; Davies, Bustin, Burridge; Kingwell, Vivian, Whear, Cooms, and Ellis.
