Match 19
14th December 1912
Portsmouth-Home
EXETER STILL WINNING:
A Southern League Match at St. James's Park
SATURDAY DECEMBER 14TH
Exeter City 2 Portsmouth 1.
At St. James's Park today, the City entertained Portsmouth, runners-up to Merthyr Town last year in the second division, and thus promoted. Pompey are of course an old club, having been formed as a professional organisation in 1899 after it had been disclosed that the playing members of the Royal Artillery club, of Portsmouth, had received payments in connection with football. They were among the leading lights" of the Southern League in those days, winning the Championship in 1901-02. Chadwick was in their team that year, at centre-half, making 18 appearances and scoring three goals, no doubt from "penalty-kicks". The City, hoping to improve their League position still more, kept the same team as last week, Brooksbank continuing in the centre of the forwards.
The teams were:
CITY
Pym Fort Hurst Rigby Pratt Lockett Whittaker Cooper Brooksbank Crompton Ives
Referee:- Mr C.C.Fallowfield, of London.
Linesmen: Messrs G.W.Perry and T.F.Dunstan.
Duncan Rollinson Martin Stringfellow Dowling

POMPEY
The meeting of the City and Pompey produced the most exciting game seen at the "Park" this season. Throughout the entire game there was never a dull moment, and the result was open till the final whistle sounded. At the beginning Exeter took more time to settle down than the visitors, and a defeat, which would have been the first of the season at home, looked possible. Portsmouth swung the ball about with skill and speed, their forwards showing any amount of dash and verve. The City, on the other hand, were unsteady, and Pym had to be at his best to keep out two fine shots from Dowling and Martin. Eventually the City gave a glimpse of their true form, and Whittaker outpaced Knight before delivering a shrewd centre to Ives, who opened the scoring with a nice header. Pratt was later carried off with an injured foot, and did not resume. Exeter rearranged their team, playing four forwards with Whittaker taking the centre-half position.
Half-time:
EXETER CITY 1-0 PORTSMOUTH
With the wind behind them in the second half Pompey quickly got to work. A dash by their forwards saw the ball strike the Exeter crossbar, and from the rebound Martin equalised. The exchanges then became fast, keen, and exciting, and amid tremendous enthusiasm Ives regained Exeter's lead with a most remarkable shot from near the touch-line. Apart from his timely goal Ives was the best forward on the field.
Last season: No match (Portsmouth in 2nd Division).
In 1910-11: Portsmouth 2 Exeter City 0.
