Match 23
28th December 1912
Watford-Away

Plymouth & District
Torquay Town (h)

Southern League:
Watford v City.

Saturday, December 28th.

With two fine victories over Swindon Town to their credit in the Christmas holiday matches, Watford were fairly confident as to their ability to beat Exeter City at Cassio Road today. They succeeded by one clear goal, but the Grecians did not go under without a struggle, and really deserved to draw.

Watford
Webster; English, H.Bulling; V.Gregory, C.Bulling, Jebb; Mitchell, Dixon, F.J.Gregory, White, Squires.

City:
Pym; Nevin, Hurst; Rigby, Lagan, Lockett; Whittaker, Cooper, Rutter, Brooksbank, Ives.

***

Although F.Gregory was not quite fit he was selected to lead the Hornet's attack, the West Herts club having a long list of injured players just now. The Grecians, too, were below strength with Pratt, Crompton, and Fort away, although their deputies, Lagan, Brooksbank, and Nevin, in that order, had performed with the greatest of credit on previous occasions.

Half-backs Prominent.
On a ground which was very sticky players could not at first. approach anything like their normal form. The game was mostly fought out in midfield, and the half backs of both sides took a very prominent part. Eventually the Watford left-wing found their game, and Squires put across a series of good centres, one of which White converted from close range. Interval score:
Watford 1 Exeter nil.

The City played extremely well in the last half hour, but it seemed that Watford were content to hold their lead, concentrate on defence, and take no risks. Exeter's reserves all did well, particularly Nevin, who was entirely reliable as Fort's deputy.
Final:
Watford 1 goal Exeter City nil.

Last season: Watford 0 City 0.
In 1910-11: Watford 2 City 2.

City Reserves v Torquay Town
THE RESERVES: Goals by Garside (two) and Lewis before half time, and Golightly and Lewis afterwards gave Exeter Reserves an easy victory over Torquay Town at St James's Park. In the second half when the score was 3-0 Golightly struck the bar and scored from the rebound, but the whistle had already blown for offside.

Torquay:- Hancock; Cudlipp, Evans; Durbin, Singlehurst, Dixon; Chubb, Harwood, Bassett, Pridham, and Luscombe.
