How Exeter Won at the Cup Final Ground Palace Lose Their Home Record: Smart Play by Pym

PALACE V CITY:
SATURDAY JANUARY 18TH

The weather had cleared sufficiently for today's Southern League match to take place at the Crystal Palace, Sydenham, the venue for many years past of the English Cup Final and several of the great International games between England and Scotland, and other important soccer functions. Exeter City were due there today to oppose the Crystal Palace Club, and the fact that the "Glaziers" had not lost at home this season, also that in four previous visits the City have never scored a goal at the famous stadium, indicated either a home win or, at the very least, a draw.

Apart from an early season defeat at Upton Park, Exeter City have played good football in London, and their unexpected victory over Crystal Palace at Sydenham furnishes an interesting sequel to the Park Royal match before Christmas, when the Grecians ran last year's Champions to a goal. No excuse can be urged for Crystal Palace, who suffered their first defeat at home as the result of a fine headed goal by Ives twelve minutes before half-time. All the Palace's best men were at their disposal, and the failure. of the vanguard on a sticky ground must be traced neither to bad luck nor to staleness, but to the Exeter team.
It was mainly during the first half that the Grecians were called upon to put in their longest spell of defence, and prior to the scoring of the winning goal the success of the Palace appeared to be a mere question of time. Fort and Hurst were often beaten in the first fifteen minutes, and Pym made two of his best saves from Hughes, the second one from a powerful header which left the home centre-half nearly stunned. Meanwhile, the Grecians. had been handicapped by the early tendency of Whittaker to be offside, but he, Whittaker, one of the best and speediest of forwards in the City team, made ample amendments later, as Johnson, in one instance, took the ball literally from off his toes, and the centre which enabled Ives to head the winning goal also came from the outside-right. In forcibility and speed it was declared to be the best goal seen at the Palace this season, and it is becoming more and more apparent that the City obtained a real bargain by signing on Ives from the Lancashire Combination in the summer.

A Brilliant Goalkeeper.
There is scarcely need to deal with the City men individually, for there is no fault to be found with any of them. Pym's work in the last line of Exeter's defence will be remembered for a long time in London, especially the two great saves he made from Hughes before the interval, and it is clear that he is, even though not yet nineteen years old, already a brilliant goal keeper. As regards Fort and Hurst, it is sufficient to say that the Palace supporters considered them the best pair to have played at Sydenham this season. The half-backs, too, did a lot to win the game, and Rigby has not been in better trim since the fine show he put up at Park Royal; Lagan, caked in black mud from head to foot, had Smith shadowed and played out of the game from start to finish, while Lockett, in his usual quiet way, was a veritable glutton for work.

Last season: Palace 5 City 0.
In 1910-11: Palace 1 City 0.

Devon Senior Cup.
Tavistock v City Reserves
The City Reserves won at Tavistock, and are now in the semi final of the Devon Cup, being the first team to reach that stage. Exeter have never won the Cup, and it is quite likely that the semi-final in which they are engaged will be played at St. James's Park, for the County Committee go for the best "drawing" ground.
The following played at Tavistock:- Chapman; Morris, Hunt; Lewis, Clarke, Mullineux; Arscott, Addicott, Willats, Frayn, and
