The City's draw at Norwich was well deserved. In the first half the Grecians outplayed the home side, and led at the interval by Cooper's goal to nil. The second period of the game turned out to be a desperate struggle in which the City fully held their own, but were robbed of victory through Hughes's goal towards the end. Far from being lucky, the City put up another highly creditable performance, and gave Norwich a fright at a time when every single point is of priceless value to them. In all good football points Norwich were overplayed by a superior side. In fact, the "Canaries" were palpably over-anxious, and their game was one of wild kick-and-rush, with a maximum of vigour which might be expected from a side which realises that one home defeat could possibly mean relegation. The best shots of the match were made by Crompton, just as it was against Reading last week, and Mellor did extraordinarily well to stop them.
Lagan's Injury.
It is satisfactory to learn that the injury to Lagan, which caused him to be carried off, was not serious, and that he was able to leave Norwich with the rest of the team. He received a kick on the knee during the match, and this numbed his leg for a while. With Crystal Palace, Reading, and Swindon Town all engaged in cup-ties, and West Ham not playing, Exeter's point at Norwich gives them a rise of two places in the League chart to fifth.
EXETER RESERVES v R.M.L.I.
Plymouth and District League.
The Reserves beat the Marines by two goals to nil today, at St. James's Park, but considering that they had nearly all the play the margin should have been considerably wider. In fact, the only occasion on which the Marines looked like scoring was once, in the second half, when a shot by Slocombe hit the crossbar. The Sherwoods won at Crownhill against Torpoint, but Plymouth Argyle Reserves could only draw against Millbrook. This leaves the City with a five points lead at the head of the table.
The team lined up today as follows:- Chapman; Morris, Hunt; Lewis, Bassett, Mullineux; Arscott, Addicott, Brooksbank, Golightly, and Garside.
Wednesday, February 26th.
Friendly, at St. James's Park.
CITY RESERVES 6
ST. LUKE'S COLLEGE 3.
A "friendly" was played before a small crowd at St. James's, between Exeter City Reserves and St. Luke's. The City fielded a strong side, including Cooper, Whittaker, and Rigby, of the Southern League eleven. The City pressed for long periods in the opening half, but were some time in opening their account. Cooper then scored two goals with clever cross-shots, and Golightly added a third. The College backs, Sanders and Lindley, played very well, and the last-named once stopped Garside after he had run through to within five yards of the goal.
Half-time City 3 St Luke's nil.
In the second half Beckett (inside-right) scored twice for the Collegians, Golightly headed Exeter City's fourth, Cooper shot the fifth from Garside's centre, and Golightly got the sixth. In the last five minutes Simpson scored for St Luke's.
