Match 39
5th April 1913
Bristol Rovers-Away

Plymouth and District League
Royal Naval Barracks.(h)

SOUTHERN LEAGUE:
BRISTOL ROVERS v EXETER CITY.

SATURDAY, APRIL 5TH.

Exeter City had plenty of vocal encouragement at Stapleton Road, Bristol, today, for the excursion run by Mr Davey was well patronised. The match was an important one for both clubs. The Rovers had been doing none too well lately, and could not afford to sacrifice points, while Exeter City, on the other hand, had still just an outside chance of the Championship. An additional interest was afforded today's match from Exeter City's point of view from the fact that Golightly came back into the team for the first time since September. He was partner to Garside, the pair having done well together on the left-wing for the Reserves, while Crompton crossed over to inside-right, Cooper being dropped. Lagan, now fully recovered from injury, was pre ferred to Bassett for the centre half position, and Nevin took over from Fort (injured) at right-back. Bristol Rovers made one change from last Saturday, Roe coming in at centre-forward in place of Blunt. Six hundred followers took advantage of the excursion. They flocked to the ground, sporting their colours, some time before the start, and soon made their presence felt. The afternoon was fine, but a treacherous wind was blowing, and was of that wild and gusty character which renders accurate football at a discount. The City were first on the field, and at that time there were about five thousand spectators present. Bristol Rovers won the toss, and Crompton's men had to face the sun.
The teams were:
ROVERS Roney Brown Bennett Harris Walker Morris Peplow Shervey Roe Brogan Palmer

Referee:- Mr W.J.Heath, of Birmingham.
Linesmen: Messrs A.E.Moss and A.W.Stacey.
CITY Pym Nevin Hurst Rigby Lagan Lockett Whittaker Crompton Rutter Golightly Garside.

What would have been a good match at Stapleton Road was soiled by a strong north-easterly wind. It imposed a heavy handicap upon both teams, who failed to adapt their play to the conditions.
BRISTOL ROVERS 1 EXETER CITY 1.

A draw of one goal each was not an unfair result, for neither side showed much skill in shooting. During the first half, when the Rovers had the assistance of the wind, they made poor use of it. Their backs kicked too strongly, and their forwards quite failed to keep the lively ball under proper control. A large number of free-kicks were given for hands, though none of these were turned to account. The Bristolians twice appealed for penalties against Hurst for handling. On the first occasion the ball was placed for the free-kick outside the line, and on the second the appeal was ignored, although the course of the ball was considerably diverted from a shot by Palmer. On the whole Exeter were as dangerous as the Rovers, because they were a trifle faster, and a little more accurate passing. Half-time: No score. in their

The Second Half.

Play was rather better in the second half, and for a time Pym had more work to do than Roney, and he did it all well. At the end of twenty eight minutes Peplow took the ball from a centre by Palmer, and drove it past Pym to put the Rovers ahead. Five minutes from time Garside centred to Whittaker, who put the City back on terms with a fast shot into the corner.

City Reserves v Royal Naval Barracks.
Plymouth and District League

Played at St. James's Park, Exeter, this afternoon, in connect ion with the Plymouth and District League.

The Reserves lost the toss and were set to play against the wind, which was blowing up very strongly. Morris cleared well from Ardbuckle, and Chapman saved well from the same player. A good chance was missed by Addicott, from Arscott's centre, and Cooper tried to break through but was stopped by Hodges. Mullineux was injured, and had to be carried off.

Half-time, no score. Brooksbank scored for the Reserves early in the second-half, but wasted a second opportunity by sending over the bar. Ardbuckle fell over Morris's back, injuring wrist, and had to retire, and about ten minutes before the end Caddy equalised for the Barracks.
Result: A drew, 1-1.

Reserves:- Chapman; Morris, Hunt; Lewis, Bassett, Mullineux; Arscott, Cooper, Brooksbank, Addicott, and Trowbridge.
Barracks:- Sutton; Mudford, Hodges; Ware, Cutler, Small; Ardbuckle, Crye, Caddy, Lawrence, and Glinn.

  • It transpired that Ardbuckle had broken his arm, and had been removed to the Hospital.
