EXETER CITY BEATEN AT HOME BY THE CANARIES
Norwich Win 1-0 in Midweek Match
Wednesday September 8th 1954.
John Gavin, the Irish international outside right, won the points for Norwich City when he scored the only goal of their midweek match at St James's Park against Exeter City. Exeter's biggest crowd of the season, close on ten thousand, went home disappointed.
Exeter City: Bell; B.Doyle, Douglass; Dunne, Davey, Mitchell; Callan, Anderson, Houghton, Mackay, Murphy.
Norwich: Nether cott; Morgan, Lewis; McCrohan, Foulkes, Pickwick; Gavin, Hansell, Johnston, Brennan, McMillan.
Gavin scored his goal in the fifth minute of the game. Norwich City, who conceded the majority of the free kicks, profited from one of the minority that went their way when Pickwick, who came in as a late re placement for Ashman, was obstructed as he was moving up in support of the attack. McMillan drove hard into a crowded goalmouth, Gavin deflected the ball into the net, and that is how the points went to Norwich. Johnston, faster, cleverer, and a far better centre forward than he was last season, went through stylishly on several occasions, but his shooting was not up to the standard of his general play, most of his shots either going over the bar or being saved by Bell. Towards the end in the fast-gathering gloom Exeter strove hard, and a high, angled shot from Anderson was diverted over the bar by the head. of one of the Norwich backs.
Further shots by Murphy and Houghton cleared the bar without the need for interception, and by then Exeter had shot their bolt. It was an entertaining game, and victory went to the team deserving of it. Exeter are unlikely to meet a more skilful side than Norwich this season.

SOUTHERN CUP TIE:
BATH CITY v EXETER CITY RESERVES
Twice Exeter City Reserves and Bath have now shared four goals in the eliminating round of the Southern League Cup, which is played in two legs.
Bath City: Riley; Gale and Mitchelson;
McLean, Lockier, and Jenkins; Newman, McLaren, Pinchbeck, Knight, and Lyons.
City Reserves: Morton; Walton and Rowe; Owens, Harvey, and Williams; Priestley, John, Doyle, Setters, and McClelland.
For the record, Newman scored for Bath in the sixth minute; John, who was the smartest forward on view, equalised in the 21st; Doyle gave Exeter the lead midway through the second half, and three minutes from time McLean saved the game for Bath with a superb goal. Exeter City have signed on another new goalkeeper. He was transferred from Southend United in time to turn out for the Reserves v Bath in the cup-tie (see above) and he was the star turn. He was born at Acton, London, 28 years ago and first came into football prominence with Chelmsford. He joined Watford in 1948 and made over a hundred appearances for that club before removing to Southend in February 1952. Apart from being a football goalkeeper Morton is also a well known county cricketer with Middlesex.
