SAME PATTERN CITY WELL BEATEN 2-0 AWAY

Gunn Shows the Way:
Bell a Good Goalkeeper

Whereas Exeter City made extensive changes at Dean Court today, the Bournemouth side was unchanged for the seventh successive game. Tommy Dunne, who has been Exeter's best player so far this season, is suffering from a damaged ankle. Bournemouth kicked off and soon made headway on the left wing, where Newsham directed the ball inside cleverly, but Owens cleared.

BOURNEMOUTH & BOSCOMBE 2 (Gunn 2)
EXETER CITY 0.
Half-time 1-0.
Saturday September 11th
at Dean Court.

Bournemouth: Godwin; Drummond and Keetley; Rushworth, Crosland, and Brown; Gunn, Siddall, Fidler, Newsham, and allen.

Exeter City:- Bell; B.Doyle and Douglass; Owens, Davey, and Mitchell; McClelland, Anderson, L.Doyle, Houghton, and Mackay.

Referee: Mr. G. W. Pullin, of Bristol.

This was Exeter City as usual. The defence stood up manfully against prolonged pressure but the forward line was not good enough to ease the burden. Mackay and Houghton combined well in spasms but the right flank was never in the game. Anderson was too slow and McClelland did almost everything that was wrong, including the failure to convert two very easy chances. Exeter's half backs were engaged largely on a defensive role. Owens did as well as any in the visiting middle line. Doyle was the better of two hard-working and fully extended backs but the man of the match from Exeter's point of view was goalkeeper Alec Bell. But for Bell's brilliant work Bournemouth would have triumphed by a bigger margin. They were much the better side in the second half and had very little to beat in this disappointing Exeter City team, which will do nothing and get nowhere until a stronger and craftier attack is available.Bournemouth took the lead four minutes before the interval. Fidler headed the ball out to the right and Gunn met it first-time and his high, angled shot sped into the far corner of the net, giving Bell no chance. Twenty minutes of the second half had gone when Bournemouth increased their lead. Fidler sent a short pass to Gunn, whose strong left-footed drive from fully 25 yards out swerved into the net. McClelland missed Exeter's best chance of the match when, ten minutes from the end Paddy Doyle's pass left him with only Godwin to beat. had time to bring the ball under control and could have picked his spot, but all he did was to kick weakly into the goalkeeper's arms.

GREAT GOAL BUT CITY RESERVES DIP 1-3
City Reserves v Weymouth

Exeter City Reserves' young forward line soon had the Weymouth backs in trouble at St James's Park this afternoon. Clegg was well positioned to save a shot from Setters, and then the former Whipton amateur, David Robinson, headed just wide from a good centre by Priestley. Twelve minutes after the start, however, Boyd put Weymouth in front, this goal being equalised by John with a diving header. Weymouth's lead was restored by Dave Massart, the old Walsall and Bury centre forward, and at half-time the visitors led by 2 goals to one. Exeter were the better team after the interval and were unlucky when John hit the crossbar with a stinging drive and Walton shot over from the rebound. Boyd scored again for Weymouth in the 69th minute.

Exeter's Brilliant Goal
The goal scored by the City Reserves in the 18th minute of the game was the best seen at the Park this season. Every man in the forward line touched the ball at least once in all out attacking play, and the move ended with Roy John diving at full length to head the ball home from Priestley's centre.

Exeter team:- Morton; Walton, and Rowe; Taylor, Harvey, and Callan; Priestley, Setters, John, Robinson, and Rees.
