Gloucester (h)
EXPERIMENTAL CITY ATTACK WELL MASTERED.
But Half-backs Overworked:
Norwich Do the Double
Wednesday, September 15th 1954.
Early in the season it may be, but the "Canaries", who beat Exeter just as easily as the score indicates, already have the appearance of a promotion winning team.This match, at Carrow Road, Norwich, on Wednesday evening, was seen by an enthusiastic crowd of nearly sixteen thousand.
NORWICH CITY 3 (Johnston 2, Brennan penalty)
EXETER CITY 0
Half-time Norwich 2 Exeter 0.
Norwich City:- Nethercott; Morgan, Lewis; McCrohan, Foulkes, Pickwick;
Gavin, Hansell, Johnston, Brennan, McMillan.
Exeter City: Morton; B.Doyle, Douglass; Owens, Davey, Callan; John, Houghton, Mitchell, Mackay, Rees.
Only superb goalkeeping by Morton and a determined display by Davey saved Exeter from an annihilating defeat. The Exeter half backs and backs were overworked and under pressure for nearly all the match. The rearranged forward line was a complete flop.
EXETER CITY RESERVES WERE TOO DILATORY
City Reserves 2 Gloucester City 3. There were too many players in the Exeter team at St James's Park on Wednesday evening whose performance was dilatory, to say the least. On paper the Exeter attack bore an experienced look. On the field the line resembled a set of unenthusiastic novices with the possible exception of Eddie Murphy.
Team: P.Elson; Walton, Rowe; Setters, Harvey, Williams; Priestley, Anderson, L.Doyle, Murphy, and McClelland.
