COLLINS HEADER GAVE TORQUAY 'DERBY' WIN

First Half Mastery Passed to Home Team

Saturday October 2nd.

The match, attended by 11,927 spectators, at Plainmoor, was given real "Devon Derby" send-off when two six year old boy mascots, both wearing the rival colours of the two teams, accompanied the captains onto the field and to the centre for the toss-up. Webber beat Davey for choice of ends, and the City, facing the sun in the opening half, began with a promising advance down the right wing.

Referee:- Mr. C. C. Porter of Taunton.

EXETER CITY Morton Douglass B.Doyle Mitchell Davey Owens
McClelland Anderson Walton Ellaway Callan

Over excitement was noticeable in the early stages, and the defences were on top until McClelland picked up a loose ball in midfield and raced past the Torquay right back. As McClelland made for the middle Anderson ran outside to collect his pass, and his centre, accurately placed, was headed behind by one of the Torquay half backs. The flag-kick brought no danger to Torquay but the home side were in trouble a few minutes later when Ellaway, McClelland, and Anderson combined effectively in a triangular movement and Anderson finally sent McClelland clear with a pass inside the full-back. Unfortunately McClelland took the ball too far ahead, and his effort from an acute angle went behind.

Torquay resumed with rousing attacks and Shaw was blocked by Douglass in the nick of time. Keeping up the pressure Torquay attacked next on the left flank, and Morton did well to catch and clear a centre from Thomas. The City had lost their early sparkle and were now being kept on the defensive, and the United, raiding this time on the right, forced a corner when Shaw's centre was turned behind by Douglass. Shaw took the flag-kick and placed the ball perfectly for Collins to jump and head into the net strongly from 12 yards. Collins then went through again and shot a shade wide from 20 yards' range. The United were now taking a leaf out of Exeter's book by moving the
ball freely, and the City's goal survived fortunately when a shot by J.T.Smith passed behind after striking an Exeter defender. The first half had been Exeter's but it was now Torquay who were dictating the game. Corner after corner was conceded by an outplayed City defence, and from one of them a shot by Thomas was blocked on the goal-line by Doyle.

One goal decided the Devon Derby at Plainmoor, and Torquay scored it to win a match that was no football classic. As usual when these rivals meet there was more energy and enthusiasm than polish. The City were the better team in the first half, but Torquay held an undisputed mastery afterwards. And each side fared better when they were facing the strong sunshine. Exeter's defence toiled hard in the second half, but Morton ought to have saved the header from which Collins gave Torquay the lead early in the second half.
Walton was a hard-working centre-forward, and from him came Exeter's
two best scoring attempts. A shot in the first half hit the crossbar and a flashing drive after the interval missed the angle of the goal by inches only. Either of these efforts was worth a goal. Anderson was the City's best forward, and the schemer behind most of the visiting side's advances.

CITY RESERVES UNLUCKY

Andy Donaldson made his first appearance of the season for Exeter City Reserves against Worcester City at St. James's Park. Also in the team were Graham Lear and Gordon Kaile, now recovered from injury.

City Reserves:- G.Lear; L.Doyle and Williams; Setters, Harvey, and Houghton; Priestley, Robinson, Donaldson, Grinney, and Kaile.

Worcester City:- Hall; Lindsay and Spence; Wilcox, Spilsbury, and Long; Hodgetts, Lewis, Gilfillan, Laing, and Beech.

Referee:- Mr. T. Wise, of Bristol.

Combination between Kaile, Houghton, and Donaldson gave Priestley an early chance and Hall dived full-length to save the winger's shot. Taking play to the other end Beech had a good opportunity, but shot wide.Donaldson was prominent in other City attacks and his header from a centre by Kaile hit the crossbar. Worcester went ahead after 23 minutes when Long's 30 yards shot hit the inside of the post and dropped into the net. Exeter Reserves exerted tremendous pressure practically throughout the second half yet could not score. Worcester, who won by the only goal scored, can consider themselves very fortunate to return with two points.
