The City were narrow winners of a hard-fought game. Most of the good football, certainly the cleverest, came from Brentford in the second half, but before the interval Exeter were on top. Doyle stood out in the home defence. He was unruffled and his kicking was timed to perfection. There was no finer full-back on view. At half-back Mitchell was the best, while in attack Mackay was the star in the first half with Kaile taking the honours afterwards. There was much good-natured banter before the match, for the rival managers of these clubs are brothers. Bill Dodgin, the elder of the clan, recalled that his last visit to the City's ground was nearly 20 years ago as a member of Charlton's team which lost a cup replay with Exeter by 5 goals to 2. "I hope history doesn't repeat itself at the end of today's duel of the Dodgins" he said. Mackay scored for the City after 15 minutes and Robertson headed an equaliser. Callan then beat the Brentford goalkeeper with a surprise. shot from a narrow angle on the right wing. Rainford, in the second half, with a header, put Brentford on terms, and the matter rested there until 20 minutes from time, and against the run of the play Exeter were in the lead again. Kaile was going through when he was fouled by Bristow in the penalty area, and Mackay with a low shot netted the spot kick.
