Match 15
16th October 1954
Coventry City Away

Southern League
Yeovil (h)

CITY ATTACK FADED AFTER A GREAT GOAL:
COVENTRY AND EXETER DRAW:
KELLY BRILLIANT:

Exeter City's defence took a terrific battering at Coventry today and that the Grecians emerged with a share of the points is due almost solely to the rocklike defence of Kelly and his backs.

COVENTRY: Matthews; Jones, Kirk; Harvey, McDonnell, Simpson; Nutt, Jamieson, Dutton, Capel, and Sambrook.

EXETER: Kelly; B.Doyle, Douglass; Owens, Davey, Mitchell; Callan, Ellaway, John, Mackay, and Kaile.

Kelly was right back to his very best form, and one of his many saves was a miraculous effort at the expense of Jamieson before the interval. Doyle and Douglass had a difficult task to match the cleverness and speed of the Coventry wingers, but each of these defenders played a prominent part in achieving the creditable result. Davey was another solid performer. Little was seen of the Exeter attack, particularly after the interval but John deserves credit for the energetic way he always kept going. Both goals were scored in the first half, Ellaway for the City after 5 minutes and Capel for Coventry 20 minutes later.
The attendance was 13,619.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE.
CITY RESERVES v YEOVIL
CITY RESERVES RALLIED TOO LATE.

Yeovil opened the scoring early in the game with the City Reserves at St James's Park. Barney Singleton skippered Yeovil Town on his return to his former ground. Bell was in goal for the City, his first game since his call up for military duty. The first excitement came when Singleton dropped the ball; however he recovered before Donaldson could get to it. Two quick passes first by Donaldson and then Murphy brought danger to Yeovil, but each time the final pass by Setters went astray. When the City defence failed to clear from Marsh the ball ran to Ryan, who scored with a hard shot. This encouraged Yeovil, and after Bell had palmed away a swerving centre from McKay a shot from Fraser was deflected by Walton. In what was so far the best Reserves' match of the season incidents followed each other at both ends. In the 27th minute Yeovil increased their lead when Reid scored with a low shot from Fraser's pass. Singleton showed his fine qualities as a goalkeeper. Bell just beat Fraser in a race for the ball and Setters drove just over from Donaldson's pass. Although the superior side the City Reserves found themselves two goals behind at the interval. Houghton shot high over a gaping net, and when Exeter attacked again

CITY RESERVES: Bell Walton L.Doyle Dunne Harvey Houghton McClelland Setters Donaldson Murphy Rees

Referee:- Mr. L. G. Webb, of Midsomer Norton.

YEOVIL TOWN: Singleton Warren Brown Marsh Hardy Dominy
McKay Reid Fraser Stewart Ryan

Although Exeter nearly scored on the restart Yeovil took play to the other end and rattled in a third goal, Reid netting from easy range. Towards the close the City moved into top gear and rallied strongly for Rees and Murphy to score, but unfortunately it came too late to save the game.

  • These teams were in opposition again on Wednesday October 20th in a Southern League cup-tie at St. James's Park. Result: Exeter City Reserves 1 Yeovil Town 1.
