EXETER CITY GAIN A POINT AT GILLINGHAM
Kaile Equalises First Half Goal by Lewis
REVIVAL CAME TEN MINUTES FROM END OF WIND-SWEPT GAME
Saturday, November 13th 1954. Gillingham 1 (Lewis) Exeter City 1 (Kaile).
Leaving Exeter by the breakfast train today the City team's arrival at Gillingham left them only 40 minutes in which to get to the ground and change before they took the field for the start of the match at Priestfield Road.
The remainder of the journey therefore, from the station to their destination, had to be completed in taxis. Although the game opened in bright sunshine there was a keen diagonal wind, and the City had an advantage when Davey won the toss. Kelly, however, was the first goalkeeper to be tested, but he had no difficulty in catching a long goalwards lob from Boswell.
GILLINGHAM:
Rigg Marks Lewin Boswell Niblett Riggs
Lewis Scarth Durkin Evans Miller
Referee - Mr. A. Hill, of Newport.
EXETER CITY:
Kelly Douglass B.Doyle Mitchell Davey Setters Kaile Murphy Donaldson Mackay McClelland
Play was uneventful for several minutes, but Gillingham were soon to strike an unexpected blow. Desultory exchanges ended with a raid on the left. Riggs crossed the ball smartly and Lewis rushed in to beat Kelly with a shot at close quarters. Thus, with only ten minutes gone, the City were a goal down. Murphy almost cancelled out Gillingham's lead when, from Donaldson's pass, he shot instantly from 30 yards. The ball, swerving in the wind, took Rigg by surprise, and he was relieved to see it pass by the angle of the far post and crossbar. Little in the way of match winning ideas had been seen from the City's attack so far. This game was following the usual pattern, namely a hard-working defence behind a too slow and too easily beaten line of forwards. On the whole the more impressive efforts were coming from the better knit and faster moving Gillingham forwards. Over-kicking was another Exeter fault, and it was the more noticeable on this windy day. Half-time Gillingham 1 Exeter City nil. Exchanges were generally of a scrappy nature as the second half got going and neither goalkeeper was seriously troubled. However, with only ten minutes left on the clock, the best was yet to come. At this point there was an Exeter revival, and it brought about an equalising goal. Kaile was the scorer and Murphy the creator of the chance. It was the tenacity and skill of Murphy, who beat two opponents in a small space and finished up by drawing Marks out of his goal that had Gillingham's defence running round in circles, and when the ball was slipped across the empty goalmouth Kaile was left with the formality of running it into the unguarded net.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE
CITY RESERVES v CHELTENHAM
EARLY GOALS GIVE RESERVES VICTORY
Exeter City Reserves were a goal ahead in just over a minute in their game against Cheltenham Town at St. James's Park. A second goal came in the third minute.
City Reserves: Bell; Walton, Williams; Dunne, Harvey, Callan; Priestley, Anderson, John, Houghton, Rees.
Cheltenham: Gourlay; Horder, Harlow; Hyde, Withers, Dunn; Cleland, Findlay, Hawkins, Scott, Mitchinson.
Referee: Mr J.H.Marsh.
A stubborn tackle by Callan was followed by a clever through pass by Anderson, and Houghton crashed a right-foot drive just inside the upright. Gourlay was quickly in action again as Priestley forced his way into the visitors penalty area, but he had no chance with a high angled shot from John which put the Reserves two up. Cheltenham improved and Hawkins scored a goal for them at the end of half an hour's play.In the second half Exeter's early dash appeared to have deserted them, and it was not until two minutes from time that Rees shot the third goal.
Result:
City Reserves 3 Cheltenham Town 1.
