CITY LOST THE LEAD AND A POINT:
ATTACK LIMP

Wing Halves and Mackay the Best Triers:

Saturday, December 4th 1954.

EXETER CITY 1 (ELLAWAY)
WALSALL 1 (RICHARDS).

There was a small attendance (about 5,000) at St James's Park for the match between Exeter City and Walsall today, and the reasons were not far to seek. Not only was the attraction poor (Walsall are bottom of the League) but the weather, cold and blustery, was not conducive to tempt anyone but the die-hard soccer fans away from the fireside.

Exeter City: Kelly; B.Doyle, Douglass; Setters, Davey, Mitchell; Priestley, Mackay, Ellaway, Murphy, McClelland.

Walsall:- Baldwin; Gutteridge, Vinall; Crook, Bridge, Tarrant; Morris, Dorman, Richards, Ferriday, Meek.

Referee: Mr. E. G. Porter of Taunton.

Even against bottom-of-the-table Walsall the City were unable to find a way through and to strike a winning vein. They had their chances this afternoon, and should have held the lead quite comfortably at the interval.
The story, however, was much the same as in other matches. The backs
and halves were stubborn enough but the attack lacked cohesion and thrust. Exeter City's wing half-backs did reasonably well, and the full-backs, especially Douglass, had a good game. The wind frequently upset calculations but, even taking this into con sideration, the players of both sides made far too many mistakes. The match typified a struggle between lowly-placed Third Division teams, notably in the second half, when play became extremely ragged.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE
HEADINGTON v CITY RESERVES

Exeter City Reserves won their Southern League match at Headington by four goals (Walton 2, Jones, and Anderson) to one (Yates).

Headington:- Ansell; Croker, Parker; Johnston, Craig, Hudson; Steel, Yates, Nicklas, Duncan, and Bain.

Exeter City: Bell; Callan, Williams; Dunne, Harvey, Owens; Jones, Anderson, Walton, Houghton, and Rees.
The visitors in this game made better use of their chances, and well deserved to win. They were not flattered by the margin one bit.

  • EXETER AND CARDIFF IN A PLAYER EXCHANGE City's New Winger is Peter Thomas

An exchange of players took place this week between Exeter City and Cardiff City.Peter Thomas, aged 24 years, and the reserve outside right of the Welsh First Division side, joined Exeter City on Thursday, and the next day Callan was transferred back to Cardiff, his old club. Supporters of Exeter City will be sorry to hear of the departure of Dennis Callan, who in his short time with the Grecians, has shown excellent form in several different positions, sometimes as a wing forward and sometimes as a half back, and last week as a right full back.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 11TH 1954.
EXETER CITY'S BLANK SATURDAY.

There was no match for Exeter City today on account of it being the day when the second round of the F.A.Cup was down for decision. By a strange coincidence the City's League opponents should have been the very team which knocked them out of the Cup in the first round, namely Millwall.
The Lions, playing their second round tie at the Den, were successful against Accrington Stanley, of the 3rd Division North, by 3 goals to 2.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE
CITY RESERVES v BARRY
11th December 1954

Exeter City Reserves were on duty at St. James's Park, against Barry in a Southern League match, and won by 2 goals to nil.

City Reserves: Bell; Walton, Williams; Setters, Harvey, Owens; Thomas, Anderson, John, Houghton, and Priestley.
Barry: Lewis; Williams, Lyske; Bright, Bellas, Clark; Dykes, Allen, Widger, Cain, and Pike.

In the first minute a strong Exeter attack developed on the right and was intelligently switched to the opposite flank by Setters. The visiting defence floundered and finally Anderson gave Houghton an ideal passright in front of goal. Houghton's first-time shot from the edge of the penalty area struck Bellas in flight and was deflected past the goalkeeper, who, moving the wrong way, had no chance of saving. Exeter never appeared in any danger of defeat, and Anderson scored a second goal after the interval.
City Reserves 2 Barry Town nil.
