No finer football has been played by Exeter City this season than that seen during the first half on Christmas Day. Swindon Town were defeated by 2 goals to 1 but after the interval there was a change in the pattern of play and Exeter were struggling.
Teams
Exeter City:
Kelly; B.Doyle, Douglass; Setters, Davey, Mitchell; Thomas, Mackay, John, Murphy, McClelland.
Swindon:
Burton; Hunt, Page; Cross, Hudson, Williamson; Gibson, McClelland, Sampson, Gemmell, Beards.
Referee:- Mr B.M.Griffiths of Newport.
Linesmen: Messrs E.F.Damen and G.Walker.
Why the decline? Part of the trouble was due to the fact that the inside-forwards lost touch. Murphy and Mackay, so good for 45 minutes, were ineffective for the remainder of the match. The half-backs also lost their grip. Outstanding for the City was the new man, Peter Thomas, on the right wing. Charlie McClelland had a hand in the two goals, obtained by Murphy in the 17th minute and John in the 48th. Swindon's reply was by Gemmell, a smart inside-left.
Southern League
Bath City beat Exeter City Reserves by 3 goals to nil.
