Match 27
22nd January 1955
Bournemouth (h)
EXETER CITY BOURNEMOUTH
THRILLS AND NEAR MISSES AT PARK: CITY GET DESERVED POINT.
SATURDAY JANUARY 22ND.
Exeter City started with a rush against Bournemouth today, but were lucky indeed not to be a goal down when the visitors retaliated. An interception by Mitchell was the prelude to a City raid, and this was followed by lively work in which McClelland and Murphy shone. Thomas then closed in from the right but lost control and let the ball go behind. Straight from the goal-kick Bournemouth advanced dangerously and went through at top speed with Harrison leading the attack to drive hard and low against the base of the near post. Kelly was beaten, but he turned and collected the ball as it rebounded from the woodwork. There had been no lack of thrills in the early stages of the game, and it was Bournemouth's turn to survive when from a movement begun by John on the half-way line Thomas centred for McClelland to shoot with all his force but straight at the goalkeeper, who saved. But the best shot of the match so far was one by John which cleared the crossbar by inches with Godwin hopelessly beaten. Early in the second half the Bournemouth goal had several escapes, yet it was the visitors who got the initial advantage when Newsham went through on his own to beat Kelly. This was slightly against the run of the play and eight minutes from time McClelland shot an equalising goal for Exeter.
RESULT:
EXETER CITY 1
BOURNEMOUTH & BOSCOMBE 1.
City team:- Kelly; Walton, Douglass; Setters, Harvey, Mitchell; Thomas, Houghton, John, Murphy, McClelland.
Bournemouth team:- Godwin; Cunningham, Drummond; Rushworth, Brown, Crosland; Gunn, Siddall, Hunt, Newsham, Harrison.
A hard game ended in a draw and no-one could complain at the result. The City were below standard at wing half but compensating features were the thrust of John at centre-forward and good efforts by Thomas and McClelland on the wings. Houghton, captaining the side, showed his class several times by his creation of good openings. Bournemouth as usual proved stubborn opposition, and their outstanding player was Crosland.

EXETER CITY RESERVES FAIL AT WEYMOUTH.
After play had remained around the half-way line in the early minutes of the game at Weymouth the City made two fast raids. Fagan with some clever footwork stopped one, and Rees put a high shot over the bar. After half an hour Durkin headed a clever goal for the home side, and five minutes later he scored again with a first-time drive. In the 14th minute of the second half McCarter paved the way for the third goal. Fagan's shot was held by the City goalkeeper, but from the rebound Massart put the ball in the net.
Result:
Weymouth 3 City Reserves nil.
