CITY FADED AND NEWPORT DESERVED THEIR POINT.
DUNNE AND THE DEFENCE PLAY THEIR PART WELL:
ATTACK POOR.
Saturday February 12th 1955,
Exeter City 1 Newport County 1.
At St James's Park,
Attendance 5,000.
Football in Devon was dealt another unkind blow today. Hail, snow and sleet set in at mid-day, and attendances at the bigger games in the county were considerably below average. At St James's Park there were fewer than 2,000 spectators a quarter of an hour before the start. The playing pitch was both water-logged and ice-bound in places.
Exeter City:- Kelly; Walton, Douglass; Dunne, Harvey, Mitchell; Thomas, Houghton, John, Murphy, Priestley.
Newport: Hughes; Lever, Hayward; Hollyman, Wilcox, Thomas; Graham, Lucas, Johnston, Harris, Shergold.
John kicked off for Exeter City towards the big bank end, and Wilcox checked the home side's first attack. Newport County fully deserved their point. They lasted the pace better and were definitely on top after the interval, when Johnston levelled the scores. John with a header had put Exeter in front earlier on. Dunne was the pick of the Exeter half-backs. He was good in defence and always accurate in his use of the ball.
SOUTHERN LEAGUE
Merthyr v City Reserves
At Merthyr on a snow-covered ground the City Reserves and the home team shared two points and two goals. Bell was Exeter's hero in the opening stages when after he cleared a header from Howarth he then held firmly on to a close range shot from Driscoll. Although Exeter were excelling in midfield, the Welshmen were proving
more dangerous when within shooting range, and the City Reserves have only Bell to thank for conceding no goals before the interval. With time running out in the second half Bell was at last beaten, by Howarth, but Mackay equalised.
Result:
Merthyr Tydfil 1 City Reserves 1.
FLOODLIT FRIENDLY MATCH AT ST JAMES'S PARK
Exeter City v. Grazer Sports Klub of Austria
On Monday (February 14th) the friendly game under floodlights between Exeter City and an Austrian touring team ended in victory for Exeter by 4 goals to 1. Unfortunately the St James's Park playing pitch at present is not at all suitable for football. In this match pools of water lay on the ground, the ball played all manner of tricks, and the players had difficulty in keeping upright on such a treacherous surface, let alone playing football. The fixture was a financial flop as well, only a crowd of less than fifteen hundred turning up.
Exeter City team:- Kelly; Walton, Douglass; Dunne, Harvey, Mitchell; Thomas, Houghton, John, Mackay, and Priestley.
- The goals were scored by Thomas, Mackay two (including one penalty), and Donaldson for Exeter and by Anhofer for Grazer.
