TORQUAY WIN THE SNOW 'DERBY' BY TWO - ONE.
CITY LACKED PUNCH:

ATTENDANCE AT ST JAMES'S PARK 11,000.

Saturday February 19th:
More than threequarters of the "Park" pitch was carpeted by an inch of snow when the Devon 'Derby' between the City and Torquay United kicked off before an estimated attendance of between ten and eleven thousand. The referee, Mr. G. C. Porter, was an early arrival from Taunton and after a brief inspection decided the ground was fit enough to play on. As a precautionary measure the touch-lines and other markings were made in pink. Torquay won the toss and played towards the St James's Road end, and the first excitement came when Mackay slipped a cunning pass through the middle for John to chase, but the home leader was beaten for pace by Smith, who passed back to Jefferies.

EXETER CITY:
Kelly Walton Douglass Dunne Harvey Mitchell Thomas Mackay John Houghton McClelland

Referee:- Mr G.C.Porter of Taunton.

TORQUAY UNITED:
Jefferies Towers Smith Norman Webber Lewis,
Thomas Mills Dobbie Collins Shaw

The best football in this Devon Derby was played by Torquay United in the first half. In that period the United laid the foundations of victory by securing a two-goals lead at the end of half an hour's play. Even the most biased City supporter could not begrudge the visiting team their advantage at that stage. Exeter made the mistake of keeping the ball much too close on the snowbound turf, and laboured attacks were easily broken up before danger threatened. Webber was outstanding at centre half for the visiting side. After the interval when Torquay were handicapped by an injury to Shaw the City held the advantage.More punch in attack must have brought an equalising goal but it was not there. Thomas, who should have seen more of the ball, was the best of the City's forwards. Harvey, Mitchell, and Dunne worked hard in the intermediate line and Walton was the better of the full-backs. Collins in the 13th minute put Torquay in front with a header; Mills added the second goal and Mackay headed one for Exeter, all in the first half.

Southern League

Worcester City 3-0 City Reserves

No weak link

Fighting for the championship, Worcester won this game far easier than the score suggests, for throughout the whole 90 minutes their defence was never extended, The home side played some fine football and were soon in the lead when Beech scored from a free kick. The lead was quickly increased when, after a movement in which five players took part, Hodgetts, who had a great game at outside-right, scored a splendid goal. Although there was only one goal, scored by the Worcester captain Jack Lewis, in the second half, the Exeter goal had a charmed life. John Spilsbury, at centre-half outplayed Andy Donaldson, and there was not a weak link in the Worcester side. This win means that Worcester have now lost the least number of matches of any club in the Southern League

EXETER CITY WON THIS BALLET ON ICE 4-2
Exeter City v Columbia Schabes

But Columbia Had Their Moments

Monday February 21st:
Watching flood-light football in the snow is a he-man's pastime, and well the one thousand spectators at St. James's Park knew it on Monday night. They shivered as they looked on, Spartans who paid to endure a lot of discomfort. Two inches of snow covered the playing pitch when the game began and more fell during the play. The miracle is that this soccer-cum-ice-hockey show ran its allotted course.

Exeter City:- Kelly; B.Doyle,Douglass; Dunne, Harvey, Owens; Thomas, Mackay, Donaldson, Anderson, McClelland.

Columbia Schabes; Paretta, Hois; Burghart, Knie, Hunger; Airam, Nemec, Brosch, Hoffman, Humann.

The City skated to a 4-2 victory. The home players were more sure of their footing as well as being speedier and stronger than those of the Columbian visitors, in whose ranks were to be seen two players of a more than useful standard. They were the goalkeeper and the left full-back. Anderson, Mackay, and Dunne were however the stars of this ballet on ice. Thomas and Mackay scored for Exeter in the first half and Donaldson and McClelland in the second. Columbia's goals were obtained in the last ten minutes, after Exeter, leading by 4 nil had considerably eased up and slowed up.
