Match 32
26th February 1955
Brentford (a)

BREAKAWAY GOAL BY STOBBART BEATS EXETER CITY.
GOALKEEPERS IN GREAT FORM:

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 26TH.

Exeter City, who were making their first appearance at Brentford's ground since the 1932-33 season, made two alterations from the side which lost at home to Torquay United last week. In the defence Brian Doyle came in for Walton, whilst at outside-left Murphy deputised for apart from patches of frozen snow here and there. Early threats came from Brentford, and after Kelly had gathered a long shot from Dudley the home side advanced again, this time on the right wing. Robertson ran the ball almost to the goal-line but his centre dropped behind.

BRENTFORD: Feehan Bassham Horne
Bristow Latimer Harper Robertson Stobbart Francis Towers Dudley

Referee:- Mr G.W.Pullin of Bristol.

EXETER CITY: Kelly Douglass B.Doyle Mitchell Harvey Dunne Murphy Houghton John Mackay Thomas

Two minutes before the interval Stobbart scored for Brentford, when the ball was driven hard down the field by Francis and Stobbart got past Douglass to shoot into the corner of the net as Kelly advanced. John, a hard working centre forward in the City ranks, received very little support, and Exeter's attack was not impressive after the half time interval. But whenever the City did threaten danger they found Feehan in good form, as was Kelly for the visitors.

  • Exeter City Reserves had no match today.
