CITY BEATEN AT THE DELL
SATURDAY MARCH 12th
SOUTHAMPTON 3
(MULGREW 2 HOSKINS)
EXETER CITY 0
Exeter City's experimental side at the Dell, Southampton, today, was reshuffled out of all recognition from the team which faced Coventry last week. Changes were made in every department except goal, and one of the most noteworthy was the return of Fred Davey, the club captain. He came back to play at left half in place of Mitchell, who moved to centre The City began with a promising move on the right but a back pass by forward John was intercepted and the Saints instantly switched play. From a long clearance by McLoughlin the ball ran down the middle and Kelly, advancing outside his own penalty area, kicked first-time to touch. Although Southampton held the upper hand for long periods the goals did not come until late in the game. Mulgrew netted midway through the second half, and this remained the only score until the last five minutes.
Southampton:- Kiernan; Ellerington, Traynor; McLoughlin, Wilkins, Simpson; Foulkes, Mulgrew, Day, Walker, Hoskins.
Exeter City: Kelly; Walton, Douglass;
Dunne, Harvey, Davey; Thomas, John, Mitchell, Ellaway, McClelland.
Referee:- Mr F.C. Williams of Oxford.
The City tried, without being quite good enough, against quicker and more forceful opponents. There remains a weakness in attack, and notably in the inside forward. positions. Thomas and Mitchell were the pick of the line today. Dunne was the City's outstanding player, and Davey made a fairly good come-back into the first team.
The attendance was 12,419.

LLANELLY WIN DESPITE BELL
Eight men with Third Division experience this season were included in the City Reserves side against Llanelly at St James's Park today. Both teams played fast and clever football in the early stages, with Exeter doing more of the attacking, but Foley, the new full-back from Ireland, earned applause for his anticipation when he moved across to clear from Thompson, who had beaten Rowe.
City Reserves:- Bell; T.Foley, Rowe; Priestley, L.Doyle, Owens; Grinney, Anderson, Houghton, Murphy, Mackay.
Llanelly:- Jones; Muir, Graham; Davies, Brown, Whitelaw; O'Driscoll, Jones, Thompson, James, Evans.
Referee: Mr W.H.Davey of Torquay.
Evans gave Llanelly the lead five minutes before half time, and for most of the second half the visitors were well on top. Exeter's man of-the-match in this period was Bell, but despite making a succession of brilliant saves he could not prevent Jones getting the second goal direct from a corner kick. Final:
City Reserves 0 Llanelly 2.
Murphy's Day
FIVE GOALS IN FIRST HALF FOR EXETER CITY RESERVES
Wednesday March 16th:
This, City Reserves v Gravesend game was Murphy's match. The little City inside left had an afternoon out against the much-changed Gravesend eleven, from which Logie was missing, and who were outclassed and defeated at St James's Park by 5 goals to 1. Murphy scored three of Exeter's goals himself, and provided Houghton and McClelland with the passes from which the others were obtained. Parsons got the visiting team's goal two minutes from the end.
City Reserves:- Bell; L.Doyle, Douglass; Owens, Harvey, Davey; Priestley, Houghton, Donaldson, Murphy, McClelland.
Gravesend: Heathcote; Wilmott, Pitcher; Fletcher, Mabey, Smith; Parsons, Reid, Gibbons, Adamson, Elliott.
The City inside forwards toyed with the weak defence of the visitors and the skilled touches of Donaldson and his colleagues in the inside positions should have produced more goals.
