Match 35
19th March 1955
Bristol City Home

Southern League
Hereford (a)

BIG CROWD SEES THE CITY LOSE.

SATURDAY MARCH 19TH:
EXETER CITY 0 BRISTOL CITY 1.

There were early queues at St James's Park this afternoon, and well represented among the first arrivals were Bristol City supporters. Over one thousand of them travelled by two special trains. As many more came by road it looked a certainty that the gate for this West Country Derby' would be almost, if not, the record for the season.

Exeter City:- Kelly; B.Doyle, Douglass; Dunne, Harvey, Davey; Thomas, Houghton, Mitchell, Murphy, John.

Bristol City:- Anderson; Guy, Thresher; White, Peacock, Williams;
Milton, Atyeo, Rogers, Burden, Boxley. Referee:- Mr. A. A. Howlett of Wiltshire.

Once again Exeter's defence bore the burden of a hard fight, but the attack, although showing more liveliness than in many games this Murphy, following his brilliant performance in the reserve team last season, Wednesday, worked hard throughout, and he was the only City forward to maintain a consistently useful standard. Where the home side failed particularly was on the wings. Thomas and John (who in any case is not a winger) were nothing like so good as their Bristol counterparts, Milton and Boxley. Dunne, the most constructive half-back, was as he so often has been this season, Exeter's best player. Credit also must be given to Davey, who allowed Atyeo little scope, while Doyle and Douglass were strong City full-backs. Bristol's goal was scored by Rogers 20 minutes from the end. Milton and White combined in midfield, Atyeo carried on the move and passed to Rogers, whose high angled shot deceived Kelly and sailed into the top far corner of the net. It was rather against the run of the play at that stage of the game, but Exeter fell away and never looked like equalising the lead they had surrendered rather unluckily.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE
CITY RESERVES WELL BEATEN AT HEREFORD

Hereford made an early attack which ended in a free kick being given to Exeter. Mountford and Thompson combined well in midfield, but the eventual shot, by Thompson, was wide. Owens for Exeter sent in a weak shot hopelessly wide. After 15 minutes James scored for Hereford. Doyle and his men were having a harassing time. As the game progressed Exeter improved but their attacks were few and far between. Then Hereford over-ran them to score three goals in five minutes, the first in 42 minutes by Vigar, the next by James a minute later, and the third by James again right on the stroke of half-time. In the second half Jakeman and James scored for Hereford United, and Donaldson for Exeter. Exeter made a grand rally in the last quarter of an hour, when their goal was obtained. The forwards showed more thrust than previously and several times went close.

Result:-
Hereford United 6 City Reserves 1.
