EXETER CITY GIVE A GOAL AWAY BUT SHARE POINTS.
HOME MATCH V GILLINGHAM
APRIL 2ND 1955.
Exeter City, without a win since February 5th, were at home today to Gillingham, and the match was witnessed by the smallest Saturday gate for several years. The weather was cold and cheerless, and there were no more than four thousand spectators present at the start.
Exeter City: Bell; B.Doyle, Douglass; Dunne, Harvey, Davey; Thomas, Mackay, Mitchell, Murphy, McClelland.
Gillingham:- Rigg; Marks, West; Boswell, Niblett, Riggs; Scarth, Evans, Sowden, Morgan, Miller.
The City deserved to have won this game. After an indifferent start they were much the better side and particularly so in the second half. Fred Davey was the hero of the game and at the same time the victim of bad luck. After putting the ball through his own goal he received a painful injury which forced him to go to centre-forward and in this position he did extremely well.
Dunne took the honours at half-back, and for all-round constructive football he was the best player on view.
Result:
Exeter City 1 (Thomas)
Gillingham 1 (Davey).
SOUTHERN LEAGUE CHELTENHAM V CITY RESERVES.
RESERVES FALL AWAY IN SECOND HALF AND LOSE BY 4-2.
Exeter City Reserves went in front in the 15th minute of their match at Cheltenham today. Teams :
Cheltenham:- Gourlay; Horder, Barlow; Hyde, Withers, Dunn; Cleland, Scott, Elston, Mitchinson, Knox.
City Reserves:- Morton; Walton, Foley; John, L.Doyle, Ellaway; Priestley, Anderson, Donaldson, Houghton, Rees.
Referee: Mr A.L.Mason of Ilminster.
Gourlay was the busier of the two goalkeepers and Exeter took the lead when Donaldson went through a gap in the defence and put the ball in the net. Cheltenham improved and Mitchinson scored but Exeter's lead was restored by Houghton. In the second half Cheltenham had much more of the game, and for long periods the City were penned in their own half. Cheltenham scored three goals through Mitchinson, Knox, and Cleland.
Final:-
Cheltenham 4 City Reserves 2.
