EXETER MERITED THEIR POINT IN HARD MATCH.
HALF BACKS GOOD BUT TOO MANY FREE KICKS.

Saturday, April 9th 1955.

For their match at Elm Park today against Exeter City Reading had a debutant, Dixon, transferred from West Ham, at centre-forward. Donaldson was recalled to the Exeter team as a replacement for John, who suffered an injury to his thigh at Aldershot.

READING: Jones; Penford, Mansell; Campbell, Davies, McLaren; Simpson, Uphill, Dixon, Anderton, and Quinlan.

EXETER CITY:- Bell; D.Boyle, Douglass; Dunne, Harve, Mitchell; Thomas, Houghton, Donaldson, Murphy, and McClelland.

Referee: Mr G.F.J.Sawyer.

Kicking off, the City began with a brisk movement in which Houghton slipped past two opponents and brought Donaldson into the game, but Penfold with a good tackle broke up the attack. In this match goalscoring chances were few but free kicks for minor infringements too numerous. Exeter were well served by their half back line, and on the whole well merited their point.
Reading 0. Exeter City 0.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE
CROWTHER EXCELS BUT CITY RESERVES WIN.

David Redwood, a young Welsh amateur from Pontypridd, a club which has already provided Exeter City with three promising young players, Owens, Packer, and Rees, made his first appearance for the City at centre half today at St James's Park. Bill Coley, who was an Exeter City players four years ago, figured at right back for the Harriers.

CITY RESERVES:- Kelly; L.Doyle, Foley; Walton, D.Redwood, Packer; Robinson, Anderson, Ellaway, Mackay, and Priestley.

KIDDERMINSTER:- Crowther; Coley, Smale; McCabe, Haycox, Millington; Punter, Duggins, Smith, Cocum, and Hardiman.

The star of today's match was Crowther, who stopped many difficult shots but who was eventually beaten by Mackay from the penalty spot. He even stopped this the first time, but he was adjudged to have moved too soon and the next time Mackay made no mistake. A flying kick by Walton and a cross-shot by Mackay were other Exeter scoring attempts saved by Crowther, but Anderson got his reward for other earlier efforts in the 36th minute. He took Ellaway's pass and ran to within six yards of the goal to put the ball into the net with a nice shot. City Reserves 2 Kidderminster Harriers nil.
