Match 44
27th April 1955
Reading (h)
EXETER CITY V READING:
WEDNESDAY APRIL 27TH 1955
This is a story which is a pleasure to write, and the story is that Exeter City gained two golden points at St James's Park on Wednesday when they beat Reading by 3 goals to 1.
No unbiased onlooker will dispute the correctness of the verdict for the City were superior in every phase of the struggle. Davey, an emergency centre forward with John and Donaldson injured, was the hero. He was a menace in the air, more than held his own against the hard-tackling Reeves, and led his line with distinction. Davey opened the scoring after 13 minutes but Reeves direct from a free kick equalised two minutes later. If Reading were in the game with a chance at the interval they were a much overplayed side in the second half. After Mackay had restored Exeter's lead and McClelland completed the City's triumph after Douglass and Davey had paved the way. With three matches to play the relegation issue appears to be between Swindon, Walsall, Exeter City, and Colchester.
City:- Bell; B.Doyle, Douglass; Dunne, Harvey, Mitchell; Thomas, Mackay, Davey, Murphy, McClelland.
