RETURN MATCH:
MILLWALL 2 EXETER CITY 2.
Monday, May 2nd, at the Den: Playing this time with greater skill and with certainly more determination Exeter City made an encouraging bid to get clear of the bottom places in the League. Now, with only fixture remaining and one point required for safety the City have only to reproduce the same thrust in attack and stubborness in defence that they showed against Millwall in this match.
MILLWALL:-Finlayson; Jardine, Anslow; Short, Hurley, Saward; Hazlett, Smith, Summers, Pacey, Prior.Same as above.
CITY:- Bell; B.Doyle, Douglass;Davey, Harvey, Mitchell; Thomas, Mackay,Walton, Murphy, McClelland.
Twice Exeter were in the lead, and Millwall only saved a point with a penalty, from which Jardine scored eleven minutes from time. Jardine thus has the distinction of having scored four goals in three games against Exeter this season. Is this a record for a full-back? Though the "Lions" had the better of the second half exchanges Exeter were clearly the more skilful side before the interval. After 35 minutes the City won a well-earned lead. Murphy placed a pass to the left of the goal and Walton cracked in a great left footed shot that left Finlayson helpless.
Half-time Millwall 0 City 1.
Millwall roused themselves after the interval, and it became the turn of the Exeter defence to show its worth. Davey, Douglass, and Mitchell stood firm when Millwall threw everything into attack, but Bell was the real hero. He got his finger-tips to one sizzling header from Hazlett that was bound for the top corner, then made two thrilling saves first from Pacey and then from Summers, but Bell had no chance when Hazlett equalised after 58 minutes. Millwall escaped when Jardine kicked a shot by Thomas from under the bar, but McClelland restored the City's lead 16 minutes from the end. Five minutes later came Jardine's equalising goal.
EXETER CITY V BIDEFORD,
MAY 3RD. DEVON CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL AT ST JAMES'S PARK.
Until half-time Bideford, whose half-back line consisted entirely of former City players, were in Tuesday night's Devon Professional Champ ionship semi-final with a chance. Jones had shot a grand goal to equalise the lead which John had given to Exeter City. The Western League side was full of fight and their supporters were happy. Then came the familiar story. Superior craft and fitness told, Exeter in the second half wearing down their opposition to win comfortably. Mitchell, who was by far the best player on the field, scored twice, his second goal being a penalty kick. Other Exeter scorers in this period were Houghton and Anderson. The attendance, including many people from North Devon, was 1,500.
Exeter City:- R.Hunkin; Foley, Douglass; Dunne, Harvey, Davey; Robinson, Houghton, John, Anderson, and Ellaway.
Bideford: K.Harris; Hockings, Pate; Booth, King, Harrower; Miller, Spalding, Jones, Heagarty, and Blatchford.
