Match 11
26th November 1904
Exeter City v 111th Battery R.F.A.

EXETER CITY v 111TH BATTERY R.F.A.

Saturday, November 26th.

Exeter City put out a strong team against the 111th Battery at St James's Park this afternoon, and when the Citizens kicked off there were several hundred spectators.

Exeter City:- Peters; Ashford and Horner; Wallage, Davidson, and Morgan; Sellick, Thomas, Reid, Eveleigh, and Russell.

Referee:- Mr. Townsend.

The Soldiers held a slight advantage at the start, but Ashford and Horner were equal to the test, and the City forwards, led by Eveleigh and Russell, careered down the field at a fast pace. to establish themselves firmly in the military's quarters. A corner was forced, and the Battery backs were severely tried. Wallage obtained possession and passed to Reid, who was tackled and lost the ball. Horner then kicked well up the field and Reid inaugurated a fast rush, which almost ended in a score, the Battery 'keeper saving with Eveleigh nearly on top of him. Russell obtained the ball and centred to Thomas, who shot wide of the goal. The City were doing all the pressing, and the wonder was, when half-time came, that the score-sheet was still blank.

REID SCORES.
The game had not been resumed for five minutes before the first point was notched by Reid with a shot which travelled close to the ground and spun into the net, giving the goalkeeper little chance. Sellick followed with some nice play, and Eveleigh came close to netting a second goal, the ball going just over the bar. The Artillery goalkeeper saved from Reid at close range, and a long shot by Thomas went over the top of the net. The Soldiers were pressing, when one of their forwards was sent off the field by the referee for rough play, he having already been cautioned by the official. The City were given a free kick but Reid's shot was a failure, and when "time" was called the result was:
Exeter City 1, 111th Battery nil.

  • The Junior League match between Heavitree and the City Reserves was cancelled, Heavitree being unable to raise a team.
