EXETER CITY 3 NEWTON TOWN 1.

Nobody who has followed the fortunes and form of Exeter City this season expected the Grecians to give much away to Newton this afternoon, and the ex-Saints lined up without Wallage, whose berth was filled by Campbell, with the complete confidence of their supporters. Newton were not at full strength, for they came up with four reserves, Stride being the most notable of their absentees. In the initial play the Citizens got possession, and forced a corner, Campbell's place kick going behind. Then Reid, taking a free-kick for a foul on himself, passed to Sellick, who had no difficulty in netting, thus scoring the opening goal. Bennett was dangerous for the Newtonians, Morgan reliving just in time to prevent a possible score. Sellick was checked by the Newton backs, then the ball was put out to Hill, who was fouled. From the resultant free kick Hill scored for Newton. Shots by Eveleigh and Russell were safely negotiated by Jeanes.

HALF TIME:
EXETER CITY 1 NEWTON TOWN 1.

Eveleigh failed badly with the goal at his mercy when play was resumed, and the Exeter forwards, as a line, have been seen to better advantage. They could do anything but shoot straight, and Reid, who was marked closely, was below form. However, Thomas scored for Exeter following clever combination between him and Sellick, and it was one of the best goals ever seen on the ground. Receiving from Sellick, Thomas got going in midfield, and beat man after man in a thrilling run, carrying everything before him, and notching the City's second point with a well-placed shot, Jeanes having no chance. Reid, after some hard play in midfield, dribbled through to the goalmouth and scored Exeter's third goal.
