Match 16

Devon v Somerset

Devon v Somerset

31st December 1904
at the County Ground.

Devon and Somerset met at the County Ground, Exeter, before a crowd of about a thousand spectators, on December 31st. It was a match of great interest locally for the reason that a county match (Association) is not a frequent occurrence in Exeter. The weather was fine, and the ground in splendid condition.

Devon started and got through to the Somerset end straight away but were sent back by a free-kick awarded for "hands," Robson planting the place kick to the goalmouth. Pethick got the ball away with a header. Reid got possession, and with a characteristic turn of speed covered much ground and centred brilliantly, for Massey to shoot through amid no little enthusiasm. The crowd had considerably increased during the first half, and when Tipping kicked off for Somerset at the start of the second. there were nearly double the number of spectators present. The first incident of note was a corner kick by Ebury, which was saved by Seymour punching out over the heads of three or four players of both sides. Lieut McLeod was a thorn in the side of the Somerset defence, and Seymour had to be on his mettle to keep out several shots from him. After a brief foray at the Devon end, the home County got going again, and McLeod from a centre by Reid scored Devon's second goal. Two minutes later McLeod beat Seymour for the third time, and from another corner taken by Reid the fourth goal was put through by Massey. Ebury then went through in a beautiful run and passed to McLeod, who shot wide of the posts. Somerset were now a badly beaten team, and could not deal with the fast attacks of McLeod, Reid, and Massey. From another rush by the home forwards Reid beat Seymour, this making the score Devon 5 Somerset 0.

J.Banfield and Gardner eventually scored for Somerset, and the match ended:- Devon 5 Somerset 2.
