Match 25

East Devon Cup
Exmouth United (h)
EAST DEVON CUP: CITY V EXMOUTH UNITED.
Saturday, February 25th.
A crowd bordering on one thousand five hundred foregathered at St James's Park this afternoon. Exeter City were of course hot favourites, and with a reproduction of recent form were bound to win. The seasiders were a well-balanced eleven, with an active lot of forwards, and throughout they were encouraged by a large number of their own supporters. The City, indeed, made all the running at the commencement with Sellick the fastest player on the field. For fully five minutes the United were defending for all they were worth, and their goalkeeper just managed to kick out with Reid almost on top of him.

Morgan fed Coles nicely, and that player's centre was met by Reid in the goalmouth, but the ball going over the bar saw a good chance lost. McLaren moved up well on the right for Exmouth, and passed to Kingdon, whose shot grazed the top of the crossbar. At the other end Russell shot wide from Davidson's pass. Reid scored for Exeter with a shot which Sturge failed to hold, and within a minute Russell added number two. Exeter's third goal was put through by Reid, who was almost in the goalmouth, from a lovely centre by Sellick.
HALF TIME:
EXETER CITY 3 EXMOUTH 0.
The City pressed early on the resumption, forcing a fruitless corner. Thomas was robbed by Hindle in midfield, and Roberts took a shot at goal, Peters punching over the bar. Horner fouled Roberts inside the penalty area, and Peters had not the ghost of a chance with Kingdon's kick, which was low and fast. Exmouth were now showing any amount of vigour, and twice within a very few minutes Peters had to clear. Exmouth were in fact putting up a very hard game, and the forwards of Exeter City were held well in check. Reid tried to go through too much on his own, and was failing to hold his line together. Carlile and Wilmot were playing a great defensive game for the seasiders, but were let down by their disregard for the charging rule. A free kick was given to Exeter, and Ashford placing the ball nicely, Thomas notched the fourth goal. The City pressed again, and Davidson middled the ball nicely to Coles, whose shot was weak, Sturge saving comfortably. The final whistle sounded with Exeter defending, and the game ended with the score:
Exeter City 4 Exmouth United 1.
- EXETER CITY'S RIGHT BACK.
Today saw the last appearance of Exeter City's capable right back on the St James's Park turf prior to his departure for Canada. Joe Ashford played a clean, hard game, and was a powerful kick and a deadly tackler, in other words a really good all-round back. He will be a distinct loss to Exeter "Soccer," and especially to the go-ahead City organisation. General satisfaction will, however, be occasioned by the action of the City committee in offering the vacant berth to such a refined and resourceful player as Dick Fenwick, who was one of the mainstays of the now defunct Belmont Club.
