REFLECTIONS ON THE SEASON

Association Notes
Soccer has followed Rugby into temporary oblivion, and it now serves to furnish a few reflections on the season of 1904-05. As the only professional club in Devon, the doings of Plymouth Argyle have been followed with great interest, and a good deal of satisfaction is expressed by its numerous admirers at the gratifying results achieved. Winners of the Western League, 4th place in the Southern League, an undefeated home record, and in the Cup Competition two drawn games played with Newcastle United, one of the two teams which went through to the Final, are all subjects for much praise. The "slave market" proceedings of the past two or three days will tend to considerably alter the Argyle team next season. This wholesale buying and selling of players is repugnant to the old-fashioned amateur ideas. Amateur soccer, however, can well be content with the progress made during the season here in Devon. New clubs have sprung up in all quarters, and very considerable public interest has been attracted to the Soccer game. The prospect therefore is exceedingly hopeful.

EXETER CITY.
The season has again closed for Exeter City, and proved to have been the finest one since its inauguration. Not only has the club been highly successful in its matches; it has also been largely patronised, and from all accounts a very enviable balance sheet will be produced by the Hon. Treasurer at the annual meeting on May 11th.

Never before in Exeter has Soccer been so much brought to the front, as the past season has shown, and the officials of the City organisation are to be commended for their lively and go ahead enthusiasm. Now that Soccer is taking on in the City it seems a logical and necessary step that the Plymouth Argyle team be brought here by the Exeter City club, to play an exhibition match at St James's Park. It would certainly be a remunerative adventure. And St James's Park itself will undergo an operation during the summer. The field is to be drained and levelled, and put into thorough order. It is also proposed to build a pavilion and an enclosure in the near future. It will be interesting to study the City's record for the past season.

  • In all, 35 matches have been played. Of these they have won 28, drawn 3, and lost 4. Goals scored numbered 118 against their opponents' 41.

In the East Devon League competition, of which Exeter City are the champions, 14 matches have been played. Eleven of these were won, 2 drawn and 1 only lost (against Dawlish with three men doing their bit for Devon County). In the number of goals they were again successful, scoring 40 against 17, which is the best goal average in the League.

GOALSCORERS.

As to the individual scorers, the Rev. Reid plonked in no less than 37, closely followed by Thomas with a good 26. Sellick is next, with a two-figure number of 13. A useful 8 goals is the success of Davidson, while Eveleigh follows with 7, Andrews 6, Russell 6, and Ashford 4. To crack their "duck" Horner, Coles, Wallage, and Morgan put in one each. Now what all the Exeter team are waiting for is the Cup and medals.
