Torpoint (a)

PLYMOUTH AND DISTRICT LEAGUE: OPENING MATCH. TORPOINT v EXETER CITY:
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH.

This match, in connection with the Plymouth and District League, was played at Victoria Park, Torpoint, this afternoon, before a good attendance. The weather was brilliant. The Rev.E.Reid, who assisted Swindon Town for two seasons before removing to Exeter, was at right-back instead of his usual position, while Davidson led the attack. Teams:

TORPOINT:- Northcott Roberts Perry
A. Prideaux C. Reynolds Tabb Coaker Selley Goad F. Prideaux F.Reynolds

Referee: Mr J. Coles.

Russell Andrews Davidson Thomas Sellick Fitzgerald Bastin Morgan.
W.Wells Reid Sturge
EXETER CITY

Morgan lost the toss, and Davidson kicked off in the direction of the Saltash end, facing brilliant sunshine. Exeter's first attack was checked by A. Prideaux and Tabb, and Reid stopped a good rush by Torpoint. Sturge fisted out from Goad, and play was transferred to the other end where Davidson sent wide. Torpoint were the first to score. The ball was fed to Coaker, who centred, and Goad sent in a stinging shot which rebounded. off Sturge and rolled into the net. When the City forwards attacked Thomas sent over the bar. Reid robbed the home forwards when things looked dangerous for the City, and after a fine run up the field with the ball, gave to Thomas, whose shot went over the bar.

SMART PLAY BY ANDREWS.

From the goal kick the ball was captured by Andrews, who by a smart bit of work eluded the Torpoint backs and shot goal a for Exeter. The score was now one all, and Torpoint, being over anxious to regain the lead, let the ball go behind, and thus an excellent opportunity was lost. The Cornishmen were slightly the better team, and Exeter were kept on the defensive for a long period. Sturge saved grandly from Tabb and Selley. Coaker sent in a shot which Sturge fisted over the bar, but nothing came of the resultant corner. A fine dribble by Coaker was stopped by Reid, then Sturge had to kick away goal-bound shots from F.Prideaux and Coaker. Two minutes before the interval Sturge punched out from Selley, but on the rebound F. Prideaux with a lightning shot scored the second goal. Reid now went to centre-forward, and the change was at once noticeable. Torpoint now resorted to hard kicking but did not appear to find this very profitable. Two corners were conceded by the City, but both were cleared, and at half-time the score was Torpoint 2 Exeter City 1. Prideaux for Torpoint and Reid for Exeter scored in the second half, Torpoint winning a well fought game by 3 goals to 2.
