EXETER CITY v ROYAL MARINES.
Friendly Match at St James's Park.
Saturday, October 21st.
Attendance 2,000.
The teams were photographed before the game, and at the invitation of the Rev. Philip Williams cheers were raised in respect for the memory of Lord Nelson, mortally wounded at Cape Trafalgar exactly one hundred years ago today. The City started down the hill, and twice in the first minute the ball was sent behind the Marines' goal. From a long clearance by Wells the ball went to Sellick, whose centre was blocked by Taylor, and Sellick, having a spill, the play wa suspended for a few moments. The Marines were penalised for this, and from the kick Fenwick netted easily. Morgan intercepted a pass and gave to Andrews, whose shot at goal was saved by Hurlow. The ball came out to Russell, who was well up, and guiding it low he beat Hurlow to register Exeter's second goal. The City forwards were shaping better than at any previous time this season, and the Marines were scarcely in the game. Reid hit the crossbar with a flying shot, then a clever passing move between Russell and Sellick gave Reid the opportunity for another shot at goal, the Reverend making no mistake. Sellick beat Cleverly for pace and scored Exeter's fourth goal, and at the interval the City led by 4 to nil. Playing down the hill in the second half the Marines put up a better show and scored two goals. The first was from a penalty kick, taken by Cleverly, and the second was unfortunately put through his own goal by Clarke. Exeter rallied, however, Thomas adding two more goals to their first half score, the game ending:-
City 6 R.M.L.I. 2.
