Match 19
20th January 1906
Plymouth & District League
Millbrook Rangers (a)

MILLBROOK RANGERS v EXETER CITY.

Saturday, January 20th.

These teams met for the first time in the Plymouth and District League on the Millbrook ground this afternoon, in good weather, and before a large attendance. Exeter won the toss and had the advantage of the incline in the first half. The Rangers started a man short. Play was very fast, the ball travelling up and down the field with bewildering rapidity. After a lot of midfield play the City got down in front of the Rangers' goal, and after repeated attempts had either gone wide or been saved by the goalkeeper Reid found the net with a fast shot. The following play was of a give-and-take character but the City were the cleverer team, and but for the fine defence of Rounsevell they might have added to their total. The Rangers forced a corner on the left and from Macey's place kick Bath hit the crossbar with a fast shot, and on the rebound Collins had no difficulty whatever in making the scores equal. From the restart Exeter tried their hardest to regain the lead, but many opportunities were lost through dallying with the ball in front of goal instead of shooting first-time. At this stage the Rangers were reinforced by the arrival of the missing player, and Selley was given a warm handful from Macey and Collins, which he coped with admirably. At the interval the score stood at one goal each. There was plenty of scoring in the second half, play being of a most exciting character. Exeter took the lead, but the Rangers got level, and then led themselves. Exeter, who played fine football, again drew level but the Rangers came again, and netting, won by 4 goals to 3.
