Match 26
17th March 1906
East Devon League
United Batteries (h)

CITY RESERVES v UNITED BATTERIES

Saturday, March 17th.

This Association game in the East Devon League was played this afternoon at St James's Park. Exeter were assisted by several of the senior (Plymouth and District League) team, whilst the Batteries were at full strength. The City started down the hill against a strong sun, and in the first few minutes were "all over" the opposition. The soldiers, as usual, excelled in long kicking, but their efforts in front of goal were palpably weak. The Rev. Reid, who was playing at left-back, defended strongly, and against a player of his class the Battery forwards had a hopeless task. Arden and West scored for Exeter, and just before the call of half-time McIntosh got a goal for the Batteries. Early in the second half the City were awarded a penalty, but Webb successfully dealt with Wells's shot, and coming away from their own half in a spirited rush Ebury made no doubt about a shot from close range, and the scores were even. Towards the conclusion of the game things began to get somewhat warm between Wells and McNaughton, the latter appearing to lose his temper at being continually beaten by the City player. The Battery man kicked Wells on the leg, and was promptly ordered off by the referee. The decision was applauded.
