Match 28
31st March 1906
Plymouth and District League
Torpoint (h)
EXETER CITY v TORPOINT.
Saturday, March 31st.
Some importance attached to this match at Exeter, inasmuch as by winning it Torpoint secured the championship of the League. The City were without the Rev. E. Reid.
Exeter City. Sturge; W. Wells, Fenwick; Brooks, Davidson, Morgan; Sellick, Bastin, Andrews, Russell, Thomas.
Torpoint. Northcott; Coaker, Perry; Tabb, C. Reynolds, Roberts; Crocker, Selley, Goad, Prideaux, F.Reynolds.
Splendid passing on the part of Torpoint marked the opening of the game, but after some good play by the Exeter half backs a good opening was provided for Sellick, but he delayed with his shooting and the chance was lost. Although there was no comparison between the teams, the sturdy defence of Wells and Fenwick, and some miraculous goalkeeping on the part of Sturge, were together responsible for nothing being scored against Exeter for half an hour. But a goal that had been imminent for some minutes eventually fell to Goad, who scored with a hard shot that cannoned off of Wells before entering the net. Play was still in the City half at the interval, Torpoint leading by one goal to nil. Torpoint on resuming again asserted their superiority, Selley and Crocker missing by inches. Goad, from two yards out, also missed, sending the ball high over the bar. To Crocker belongs the credit for Torpoint's second goal, for it was through a clever bit of play on his part that Prideaux was put through to score from right underneath the bar. Goad got a third goal for the visitors, and the City responded with one by Andrews, who found the net with an astonishing shot from the half-way line.
- On Wednesday, April 4th, a large crowd attended at the County Ground to witness a friendly match between the Plymouth Argyle full Southern League eleven and a selected East Devon League team.
The Argyle:- Sutcliffe; McNiel, A. Clark; Saul, Cleghorn, Garside; Briercliffe, Buchanan, Wilcox, Bauchop, Jack. - Andrews, Reid, and Davidson, of Exeter City, played for East Devon, who were defeated by two goals to one.
