EXETER CITY V. R. A. UNITED:
The Big Gunners Too Heavy for the Grecians
Saturday, September 8th.
Friendly match at St James's Park.
Exeter City opened their season today with a friendly match against R. A. United, a combination of the batteries at the Topsham Barracks. Andrews, the Exeter captain, was unable to turn out owing to an injury sustained at work, and Massey at the last moment decided to play for the United.
Exeter City:- Cann; Fenwick, W.Wells; Muncey, Davidson, Bastin; Sellick, Thomas, Turner, Rev E.Reid, Russell.
R.A.United: Webb; Barr, Moon; Moir, Salt, Callaghan; Ebury, Mackintosh, Massey, Tipping, Drury.
Referee: Sergt-Major Adams.
It was a bad start altogether for the City, for the Batteries won by four goals to one and what is more they won entirely on their merit. The feature of the match was the terrific shooting of R. A. United, Tipping and Mackintosh being the star forwards in that respect. For threequarters of the game there was no real understanding among the home forwards. The heat seemed to affect them far more than it did the Soldiers, while Muncey, Davidson and Bastin were right off their form for the majority of the game. Davidson improved towards the end, however. Fenwick was Exeter's best man in defence, while in the forwards the Rev Reid was persistent in his efforts but well below his usual form. Nothing was scored in the first half. Tipping eventually gave the United the lead, only for Russell to equalise. The Batteries scored again through Callaghan, Wells own goal, and Mackintosh, and won as stated.
