EXETER CITY V TAUNTON CASUALS
Visitors Bring Down a Fine Team
Saturday, September 29th.
at St James's Park, Exeter.
Exeter City enjoyed the good fortune today of having the only match of senior importance in Exeter, and look with confidence to the best gate of the season so far. Taunton Casuals, who are the Somerset County Champions, brought down an exceptionally strong team, including six of the players who assisted the club in the qualifying round of the English Cup last season. Robson, right-back, and Hardy, centre-half, are Somerset County cricket ers.
Exeter City:- Antliff; E.Wells, Fenwick;
Bastin, Davidson, Muncey;Rev E.Reid, Turner, Tipping, Massey, and Sellick.
Taunton Casuals:- Alford; E. Robson, J.Smith; Fry, P.Hardy, E.Male; Greig, E.Luke, Farrell, Sergt.Carter, and L.Edwards.
Referee:- Sergt.Major Adams.
Exeter City, whose play at times was a revelation, scored two goals in the first half, both by Tipping with hard shots, and the second half had not been long in progress before Tipping got another goal, which completed the "hat-trick." After Carter had reduced Taunton's arrears with a cross shot the Rev. Reid cleverly beat the defence and sent across a nice centre, from which Sellick beat Alford "all ends up." Reid then went off down the wing again and put across another beautiful centre. Massey was waiting for it, and going through at great speed, scored the fifth goal. The second goal of the Casuals ought never to have been let through. Davidson lost the ball in midfield and Wells miskicked close to the goal, leaving Edwards in a good position. Edwards beat Antliff with a ground shot, which the goalkeeper ought to have got down to. Exeter won by five goals to two, and the very mistakes that had marred their previous displays were wiped away in one clean sweep. The forwards were brilliant. They went down the field in a perfect string time after time, and what is more (in contrast to that which has previously been seen this season) they were extremely dangerous in front of goal. On the whole, they might have easily won by six clear goals, the two points scored by the Casuals being only third rate.
EXMOUTH ALBION v CITY RESERVES.
Played at Exmouth. Exeter kicked off down the hill and after a spell of even play Russell scored the first goal. The City were the stronger side and forced several corners without improving on them, but eventually Kelly scored. Youlden and Ebury put on two more goals after the interval, and the City won by 4 goals to nil.
