FIRST LEAGUE MATCH OF THE SEASON D.C.L.I. v Exeter City

Saturday, October 6th, at Plymouth.

Exeter City played their first match in the Plymouth League today, at Plymouth, against the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infan try. After last week's fine display against Taunton Casuals it was hoped that the greens would come away victorious, and the side originally picked was a very strong one. Reid was selected to play in Bastin's place in the half-back line, but during the week it was reported that the reverend was unable to make the journey, so Bastin was reintroduced to his usual position at left half. A disquieting report was also in circulation last night to the effect that Massey might be unable to get leave from his Battery at Topsham Barracks. This morning it was stated that he would take part in the match, and that if he were not able to travel with the rest of the team at 12:30, arrangements would be made for him to go by a later train. The City team thus remained a very strong one, as follows.

Antliff, W.Wells, Fenwick; Muncey, Davidson, Bastin; Sellick, Massey, Tipping, Turner, and Andrews.

The Duke of Cornwall's lined up as follows. Davies, Merritt, Page; Sedgeley, Baker, Bailey; Murphy, Heath, Burrows, Flowers, and Tyre. The Dukes commenced operations and immediately forced play to the Exeter end. A bout of passing by the Grecian forwards ended with Massey shooting over the bar. Then the Soldiers had a turn at attacking, and Sedgeley put in a shot which beat Antliff. Exeter improved wonderfully, and after continual pressing Tipping made the scores level. The restart saw the play greatly in the City's favour, and a splendid combined attack ended with Massey putting them ahead. The game then became very fast and exciting, and the Dukes, in a fast rush, got to the City goalmouth, the ball being netted. The soldiers still kept at it, and Bailey placed them ahead. In a fierce struggle round the home goal Davies was injured, and another player went in goal. Turner then scored for Exeter, and the attack being kept up he scored again. Exeter kept attacking but could not add to their total, and the result at the close of play was:
Exeter City 4 D.C.L.I. 3.

CITY RESERVES v 110TH BATTERY R.A.

In the absence of the City Firsts at Plymouth, the Grecians' East Devon team was engaged in a "friendly" at St James's Park against the 110th Battery.
Kerney scored for the Battery but Russell equalised with a penalty, awarded when Webb's charged Youlden in the back. Russell obtained Exeter's second goal after Webb had failed to save from West, but Carey equalised.
Ebury, Kerney (two) and Hawkes scored for the Battery after the interval, and won by six goals to two.
