Match 09
3rd November 1906
Plymouth & District League
Rifle Brigade (RFA) (a)

RIFLE BRIGADE v EXETER CITY.

At the Brickfields, Devonport, November 3rd. Two thousand spectators attended this match between full strength teams. Rifle Brigade won the toss and Tipping started for Exeter. A run by Russell and L.Turner was dangerous, but Kearney cleared, and a period of mid-field play followed. The Riflemen recovered, and beat Exeter's defence, but Kettle ballooned the ball high over the bar. It was Exeter's turn to attack next, and Bastin sent through to Tipping, who scored the first goal. Exeter led at the interval by a goal to nil, and they should have increased their lead on the restart, but Tipping shot past the post after clearing the defence. Although Sturge was in great form in the Exeter goal he was beaten four times in the second half, twice by Reading and twice by Kettle.
Result:
Rifle Brigade 4 Exeter City 1.
Teams :
Rifle Brigade:- Graham; Loasby, Kearney; Vennoir, Haynes, Cox; Thorpe, Ellis, Kettle, Bees, and Reading.

Exeter City:- Sturge; Fenwick, W.Wells; Muncey, Bastin, Reid; Sellick, L.Turner, Tipping, Davidson, and Russell.

The score in this Plymouth League match does not represent the trend of the play, as during the first half Exeter were the better team by a long chalk. After the Riflemen had equalised, however, they fell away considerably.
