Match 11
17th November 1906
Plymouth & District League
R.M.L.I. (h)
EXETER CITY v. R.M.L.I.
Keen Fight at St. James's With the Leaders
Saturday, November 17th.Great interest was taken in today's Plymouth League match at Exeter from the fact that the Marines were at the head of the League table without a loss. Muncey and Vibart were absent from the City team through injuries, and Hyde was entrusted with the custodian's position.
Exeter City:- Hyde; W.Wells, Fenwick; Bastin, Davidson, Reid; Tipping, Sellick, Massey, Turner, Russell.
Marines: Cartlidge; Boffey, Cleverley; Baker, Spargo, Roe; Wells, Hill, Reeves, Hare, Colclough.
The City kicked off exactly at 3 o'clock. They were first to attack but the Marines soon got down to the vicinity of Exeter's goal, Hyde saving well from Reeves. R.M.L.I. who beat the City by four goals to one, are by far the best team seen in the Ever-Faithful this season, faster even than the Argyle Reserves. The game was fairly interesting but it was spoiled to a great extent by the high wind and heavy rain. Tipping scored Exeter's goal early in the second-half after Massey had wasted several good opportunities. The Marines were leading at half-time by three goals to nil, after which Exeter changed their attack, Tipping going to centre, Sellick outside right, supported by Massey. Much as the fine command that Sgt-Major Adams has of a game is admired, he can be criticised on his reading of the offside rule this afternoon. He seemed to be studying where the player played the ball, instead of where the man was when the ball was played to him.
