Match 16
22nd December 1906
Plymouth & District League
ESSA (h)

EXETER CITY V ESSA
PLYMOUTH & DISTRICT LEAGUE.

Saturday, December 22nd,
at St James's Park.

This match was recognised as the first of the City's holiday matches, and the attendance was very satisfactory. The weather was excellent. The start was delayed through the late arrival of the Essa team, and Davidson signalised his first appearance as captain of Exeter City by winning the toss.

City : Vibart; Fenwick, W.Wells; Bastin, Davidson, Muncey; Sellick, Thomas, Massey, Turner, and the Rev E.Reid. Essa:- Blake; Page, Brewer; Goodsell, Ough, Batten; Hancock, Johnston, Cruttendon, Screech, and Hodge.

Referee:- Mr J.Dennis.

Exeter took the lead with a penalty kick for a foul against Sellick, Fenwick plunging the ball into the net with terrific force and thus opening the City's account. The interval was abbreviated owing to the late start which had been made. Essa missed with a penalty kick, given against Wells for a foul charge, the ball being skied over the bar. Three minutes later the referee gave the third penalty kick of the match to Essa for a trip by Wells. Essa, however, could only hit the crossbar with this shot, and when the ball was put back by one of the visiting forwards Vibart fisted out to loud applause. Yet another penalty was given the visitors, through Bastin handling, and this time Batten beat Vibart with ease.

Result: Exeter City 1 Essa 1.
