EXETER CITY v. TORPOINT
Champions of Plymouth League
at St James's Park
Saturday, January 5th.
Alec Davidson, the Exeter City captain, has joined the Devon Regiment and will be stationed at Plymouth. He will also assist Plymouth Argyle whenever possible. He came here from Halifax, and learned his football while on the books at Tottenham Hotspur. Davidson, who has been in the Ever Faithful for three football seasons is one of Exeter's best players, especially at centre half. In this position he is unsurpassed in skill and trickery and dazzling footwork. Following on the departure of Davidson, Jimmy Sellick is the new City captain.
Today, at St James's Park, Exeter City entertained Torpoint, the club which hold the Plymouth League championship. The City have suffered severe losses during the week past, Alec Davidson having gone to Plymouth to join the Army, while Bastin, who is a greatly improved half-back, has been laid up with bronchitis. Robins and Turner were also away, the latter's knee having been "crocked."
City :- Vibart; Fenwick, Hill; Morgan, W.Wells, Muncey; Sellick, Thomas, Massey, Wilson, and Reid.
Torpoint:- Tyrrell; Mildren, Memory; Macey, C.Reynolds, Tabb; Coaker, Selley, Prideaux, Barnes, and F.Reynolds. Referee:- Mr Thompson.
A fine game played before the biggest crowd the City have had at St James's Park this season ended with Exeter winning by the odd goal of five after a goal-less first half. This victory was a happy augury for Sellick's captaincy. It was, moreover, thoroughly deserved, for Torpoint, though a fine heavy team with grand combination among the forwards, always appeared beaten whenever the City essayed the long passing game. The penalty they were awarded, which Vibart saved from Macey's shot, was very tamely taken. They were three goals down at that time, and they cannot from any point of view say that they were unlucky to lose. Exeter's goals were scored by Massey (2), and Wilson. Torpoint's goals were obtained in the last quarter of an hour by Barnes.

Torquay United v City Reserves
Playing against Torquay United, at Torquay, in an East Devon League match, Exeter City Reserves lost by one goal to nil.
Torquay United were at home to Exeter City in an East Devon match on Saturday, and won by one goal to nil. Describing the match. "Old Boy" writes: - This East Devon League fixture was played at Barton Road on Saturday last. before a fair number of spectators. Ivator Cris turned up late with only ten men. Winning the toss, they elected to play down hill. The game started very fast, and it was not long before the Exeter goal was visited. Thomas sending in a stinger which struck the cross-bar. Play continued even for a bit. and then United attacked, but were pulled up for ofiside when in a good position. Time after time this happened. The City now had a turn at attacking. sending in one or two long shots which Gay easily gathered and fielded. Peerman. mis-kicking. gave the Cits a chance. only to be stopped by A. Bailey. The ball travelling to the other end. White tried a long shot without effect. At this time United were having most of the play, but could not get through. At half-time nothing had been scored.
Playing downhill, the United at once attacked, shooting time after time, but the City backs were safe. One shot struck the goalkeeper and bounced up underneath the crossbar, apparently being inside. but the referee disallowed it. Shortly after this, from a combined forward movement. Pridham scored for United. This seemed to put more life into United. Then Ebury coming away for the City, United were forced to concede a corner. which after a melece in front of goal. was eventually cleared. The Cits goal was visited, and Burton. beating the opposing backs. shot straight at the goalkeeper. Almost immediately afterwards the same player put in a shot which just missed by inches. Time was called, with the United leading by one goal to nil.
The game was a very fast one. both sides working hard. For the City handicapped as they were. Ebury, an old Battery player. made some fine openings. Their left-half and backs played a very sound game. Peerman. for United. did not play his usual game. Durbin. at centre half, played a sound and hard-working game. In fact the whole team are playing a different game altogether these last three weeks, the for ward line being all that could be desired. Pridham wants to get a bit nearer his wing man, and not to crowd his centre so much. The left wing combines well. and Thomas. in the centre. just gives the requisite amount of dash to the whole front rank
