Match 26
23rd February 1907
Plymouth & District League
Green Waves (h)

EXETER CITY v GREEN WAVES
Record Crowd at St James's Park
Saturday, February 23rd.

EXETER CITY 0 GREEN WAVES 2

The strongest team at their disposal was brought up by Green Waves today, for the chances of their winning the championship depended upon the result of this match. For this reason, Jack Robinson, the famous International goalkeeper, was back again between the posts, and his appearance alone was sufficient to attract a big crowd. Robinson was far from fit, however, as he had received a bad kick in the back ten days ago when playing for a Plymouth League XI versus the Argyle, at Plymouth, and he was still wearing plaster.

The Grecians were decidedly weak, on paper, and had to rely on assistance from the Batteries, Topsham Barracks. To avoid a confusion in colours the City played in white shirts.

City :- Vibart; W.Wells, Fenwick; Brown, Haswell, Bastin; Sellick, Hawke, Reid, Eveleigh, Aspey.

Waves: Robinson; S. Hisbent, W.Hisbent; Glazier, Bustin, Spear; Gilbert, Stokes, Chappell, Hosking, Rowe.

The City, playing before a record crowd, were immediately put on the defensive and Vibart saved two shots in the first three minutes. Hosking unaccountably missed an open goal, and Vibart saved from Chappell. Vibart saved two more shots, and then a penalty was awarded the Waves for a foul on Rowe by Wells. Bustin scored an easy goal with the kick, Vibart having no chance. The second goal to the Waves came as the result of bungling by Wells, who, despite calls from Vibart obstructed the custodian's view, and Stokes scored easily. Green Waves deserved to win, as the more polished team. The combination of their forwards and halves was far ahead of the City's, and the match was as good as won by half-time. Aspey and Sellick were Exeter's best forwards, and Bastin the most reliable defender, together with Vibart, who made many fine saves.

  • The East Devon v Cornwall match, next Saturday, on the County Ground, Exeter, will doubtless draw a big crowd, for the East Devon Association deserve every encouragement. The team picked is a good one, though the junior clubs are no doubt somewhat displeased about being overlooked, especially Friernhay. Exeter City furnish no fewer than four of the side, whilst Torrington, Newport, and South Molton are paid quite unexpected compliments. Lloyd, of Torrington, comes into the side in the centre half position owing to the absence from the district of Lintott on the day of the match.
