York City (a)

Another Defeat

MAHON CRACKS THE CITY DEFENCE

Monday August 25th 1969.

YORK CITY 1 EXETER CITY 0.

Not until the closing quarter could York City claim superiority over the Grecians at York on Monday evening, and then it was a speculative first-time shot which found its way into the City net and won both points for the home side. Twenty minutes from the finish the ball ran loose to Mahon, who was standing just outside Exeter's penalty area. His first-time left foot drive sent the leather crashing against the underside of the crossbar and into the net.

York City: Gadsby; Sibbald, Burrows;
Hewitt, Jackson, Topping; Boyer, McMahon Aimson, Hodgson, Mahon.

Exeter City:- Shearing; Blain, Balson; Parker, Sharples, Newman; Giles, Banks, Wingate, Mitten, Pleat.

Subs: Hill (York) Walker (Exeter).

The unexpectedness of that sudden shot probably took Shearing off his guard, but it was a bit of bad luck for him and his colleagues in the Exeter defence after the resolute way they had previously defied all York's earlier scoring efforts. After this goal York applied strong pressure and might well have had another, though they would not have deserved any bigger margin. There was never the difference one might have expected between a team that was riding at the top of the League table and another one struggling.
