EXETER CITY v NOTTS COUNTY at ST JAMES'S PARK

Saturday January 10th 1970.
Drawn 1-1.
With Parker recovering from a heavy cold and playing at right half Exeter City were as announced. That meant that Banks and Giles were both back after injury. In the County side Watling (goalkeeper) and Nixon (outside right) both made their Football League debuts. At Meadow Lane, Nottingham, last September, Exeter City were beaten by 4 goals to nil. Today's attendance was 3,872. Exeter won a corner in the first minute, and Watling confidently held. the centre from Mitten. At the other end Crawford conceded a corner under pressure. From it Smith put in a wild sort of shot that nearly went back to the corner flag again. The turf was firm but very wet on top, and Exeter were the first side to settle down in the slippery conditions. When Watling slipped, however, Pleat steered the loose ball across an empty goalmouth, and no one was in a position to take advantage. Two successive corners to Exeter followed, as Notts had nearly their whole team back in their own penalty area. Parker tried a shot from 25 yards but the ball flew past the upright well wide. After half an hour's play Pleat drove a hard grounder against a post and Gadston moved in quickly to score from the rebound. A tremendous scramble in the Exeter goalmouth in the fortieth minute ended with Barker scoring for Notts. The floodlights were switched on for the second half, with a heavy mist falling.
