Match 40
28th February 1970
Southend (h)

City v Southend

A Clear Win for the Grecians!

Saturday February 28th 1970.

EXETER CITY 3 SOUTHEND UNITED 0.

The injury problems at St James's Park cleared up sufficiently for Exeter City to make only one enforced change for this afternoon's home match with Southend. John Corr was out of the reckoning with ankle trouble and Walker was recalled to outside-left with Pleat moving across to the right. The weather was bright but the ground remained heavy and likely to cut up before many minutes of the game had been played.

Exeter City:- Wilson; Crawford, Blain; Parker, Sharples, Balson; Pleat, Banks, Gadston, Mitten, Walker.

Southend: Roberts; Jacques, Simpson; Beesley, Barnett, Kurrila;
Chambers, Hunt, Chisnall, Best, Clayton.
Subs: Wingate (Exeter) and Haydock (Southend).

Referee:- Mr E.T.Jennings of Stourbridge.
Linesmen: Messrs D.A.Munday and T.Hopkins.

After the first 45 minutes of play both goals remained infact. With the amount of possession and their territorial advantage Exeter had enjoyed they should have had something to show for it but they were lacking when it came to the final thrust. But two minutes after the interval their luck changed, and Gadston, latching on to an inch-perfect pass from Pleat, coolly dribbled the ball round Roberts and into the empty net. Three minutes later Pleat got Exeter's second goal with a header, and almost on the stroke of time a 25 yards drive by Sharples whistled into the net for a third goal and a clear victory for Exeter.

Attendance 4,343.
