He began his professional career at Sheffield Wednesday in July 1997, having been a trainee with the club. He signed for Chesterfield the following March and immediately got a league chance, playing 26 games for then the Saltergate club.

Moving to Cardiff City in May 2001, opportunities were few and far between for Simpkins and he only featured in 17 league games for them.

Signing for Exeter City on loan in September 2002, the first of his five games for the club came against Leyton Orient at St James’ Park.

He also had a short loan spell with Cheltenham Town, whom he joined in December 2002, before eventually moving from Cardiff City to Rochdale in August 2003, where he stayed for one season playing in 27 league games.

Simpkins next stop was Burton Albion in 2004-05, scoring once in 20 matches.

He had a loan period with Alfreton Town in 2005, before joining Leigh R.M.I. in March of the same year.

Moving to Worksop Town in 2005, before linking up with Buxton in the summer of 2007, but left without playing game, preferring instead to sign for Grantham Town.

He turned down an offer to join Worcester City due to travel concerns from his Yorkshire base, and after budget cuts at Grantham, Simpkins moved to Retford United in January 2008.

He was captain, back at Worksop Town, for 2010-11, but in June 2011, signed for Frickley Athletic. In October 2011 he joined Belper.
