Yeovil Combined X1 (a)
Yeovil Combined X1 2-6 Exeter City
EXETER CITY NEW-COMERS.
A number of newcomers play for the City at Yeovil, but the home side Includes Billy Kingdon and most of the old brigade. Right back for Exeter is a Grimsby defender, Crossleigh, who has been recommended by Steve Walker, Fowler, 17-year-old son of the former Torquay United full-back, get his first run at left-haif, Williams, of Lovells, plays goal, and other Services League men in the Exeter ranks are Donoghue (Ports- mouth) and Hurst (Oldham). At out- side-left the City are hoping to get Jefferies, of Sheffield United. Most of the remaining players were well-known Football League players before the war, and there should be plenty of craft and punch in the attack with such experienced campaigners as Ebdon, Walker and Mitcheson in action. Deacon, the Devon County centre-forward, leads Yeovil's attack, and the Line-up is:-
Yeovil. Newall: Kingdon. Heward; Mann, Wyatt, Whensley, Roy, Middleditch, Deacon, Graham, Laing.
Exeter Cily. From
Williams. Crossleigh. Rich: Ryan, Donoghue, Corbett, Fowler, Hurst, Walker, Ebdon, Mitcheson, Jeffries.
Kick-off 3. Referee: W. Edwards
ST. JAMES'S GAME.
Exeter Youth League v Royal Marines
The game at St. James's. Exeter, should be worth watching. Jimmy Chapman, in charge of the Youth League team, tells me that some of his lads are ready to make the grade in senior football. He should know. The Marines also have out some good youngsters, notably Urquhart, of the Hearts. Remember him? In case not, he gave a grand display for Exeter City against Plymouth Argyle. Was left-half in that game, but will be inside-left, his best position, tomorrow. Also in the Marines team are Mason (West Ham). Keogh (Airdrie). Pearson (Yoker) and Doyle, a Leicester City left half-back, who is one of the best propositions to have passed through the Depot ranks.
Youth League team, Southcott (Crediton); Conway (Ladysmith O.B.), Gibson; Coleman (Tavistock Rang.). Carnell (Ladysmith) Branton (capt.); Yeo (Tavistock), Rich (Sandford), Tansey, Miller (Tavistock), Good (Lady- smith). K.o., 3. Referee, H. Bartlett.
Extra steadiness, plus a bit of luck. gave the H.Q. a Charity Cup win over the H Co. last week. The 4-2 margin was flattering, for one of the H.Q.'s goals was offside in my opinion. In the other Cup-tie, the Depot laid the R.A.F. bogey, won by 7-2, and owed much to the excellence of their young half-backs. Semi-final draw now reads: I.T.C, v. Depot; H.Q. v. Camp Staff, So the final must be an all- Marine affair
They could not find a pair of boots at the Depot to fit Mne. Wilks last week. He takes size fours, and had to be fitted up with a borrowed schoolboy's pair. Still, everything turned out O.K., and the Depot beat the Navy 6-4 in a League match. Camp Staff are on the up grade. 1.T.C. are on the slide. Result of last week's game: Camp Staff 3, 1.T.C. 0.
Football Double Event For Exeter Clubs
Exeter football teams scored a grand double on Saturday. City outclassed Yeovil, at Yeovil, by six goals to two. Exeter beat Plymouth by 18 points to nothing on the Exeter County Ground.
From the time Ebdon opened the City's account at Yeovil, ten minutes after the start, there was little doubt as to the way the game would go. Yeovil, although hard triers, were never so well together as Exeter. Once again Mitcheson was the star of the City attack. One of his three goals was perfectly obtained. He brought the ball down smartly. pusned is along a yard, and then snot from just outside the penalty area. A low drive into the rar corner of the net beat Newall all the way. Ebdon, showing glimpses of his peacetime form. was a thrustful leader of the City attack, and scored twice. Hurst, the other Exeter goal- scorer, was far and away the best wing lo forward on view. Yeovil goals were obtained by Deacon (wno was an industrious centre forward) and Middleditch. Few players in the home side really impressed, but an exception was Billy Kingdon at right back. The old Villa and Southampton defender defies time remarkably well. He was as active as most and much cleverer than any of his colleagues in tnis game.
EXETER'S NEWCOMERS.
Two of the newcomers introduced by Exeter, Fowler at left half, and Crossley, right back, more than justified themselves. Fowler, only 17. is built on the right lines, and has promise. He kicks a good ball, and has a good knowledge of the game for his years. Crossley, who was on Clif- tonville's books when war broke out. has had offers from two Football League clubs since he joined the Royal Navy. He and Donoghue were a sound full-back pair. Corbett, centre half, and Ryan, right half, were others to enjoy a good match. In passing, a word of thanks to the enthusiastic members of the Yeovil Football Committee. Their arrange- ments were first rate.
Next Saturday the City are at St. James's Park, and an attractive game should be seen against the pick of the Royal Marines in this area
10th February 1945
At Yeovil
Mitcheson, the old Plymouth Argyle inside-forward, scored three goals for Exeter City at Yeovil and was the best forward on view. Exeter won by six goals to two, the other scorers being Ebdon and Hurst. Deacon and Middleditch obtained Yeovil's goals.
Last Saturday the City journeyed to Yeovil where big efforts are being made to prepare the way for a return to Southern League football next season. The Committee, who are staging a series of matches at Yeovil this season, wel- comed the City party most hospitably and their arrangements left nothing to be desired. The City team were good value for the 6-2 win and played well throughout despite the fact that, as is often the case in these days, the eleven was not completed until 10.30 the same morning. Newcomers who did well were Crossley (right back), who makes his first appearance at St. James' Park to-day and who is a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy; and Hary Fowler (left half) who signed amateur forms for the City in December, a couple of days after his 17th birthday. Fowler is the son of the old Torquay United full back. The return match with Yeovil takes place at the Park on Saturday, 17th March.
