THE F.A CUP
DAVID CROCKFORD LOOKS AT CITY'S RUN IN THE 1989/90 F.A CUP
SATURDAY 18TH NOVEMBER
DARTFORD 1 EXETER CITY 1
The Torquay fanzine describes as cup encounters at non league 'banana skin games'. For City fans this is a painfully true opposition expression, having seen Exeter embarrassed time and time again by our semi professional cousins.
For once though, we managed to escape from non league territory with a draw, but we had a lot to thank the now displaced Dave Walter for. He was outstanding in the second half as the Beazer Homes League outfit strove forward for the win they probably deserved on the balance of play.
The first half was lacking in goalscoring opportunities. Scott Hiley and Steve Neville provided City's only real attacking threats, and it was from one of Nevs' runs that City won a penalty right on half time. Centre half lan Brown hacked Neville down and Darran Rowbotham stroked home the resulting spot kick to the delight of City's 600 strong support.
I for one was totally convinced that City would cruise on with relative ease in the second half, but I was to be proved wrong. Dartford continued to compete for everything, and out of the blue came an equaliser on 71 minutes. Midfielder Andy Hessenthaler ran forward unchallenged before unleashing a furious 25 yard drive which whistled past Walter. Oh no, here we go again !
The last twenty minutes were a real test for the City back four. John Leslie was denied by Walter when his header looked a goal all the way, and as for the save Dave produced to stop Robbie Garvey from ten yards. Garvey in particular was frustrated by the City keeper having had one decent first half shot and two noteworthy efforts kept out. However, the Dartford players could feel proud that they had more than adequately tested their high flying opponents without ever resorting to kick and rush tactics.
