Match 28
9th December 1989
FA Cup 2nd Round
Maidstone (a)

SATURDAY 9th DECEMBER -

MAIDSTONE UNITED 1 EXETER CITY 1

Most City fans must have expected a real struggle at Watling Street, with Maidstone being the form side of the division and having beaten City at the same venue the previous Saturday. This was City's third visit to the ground in 21 days and was easily their best display of the three in front of 450 deja-vu struck Exeter fans

City's main man was Mark Cooper, who had impressed a week earlier and also at Sunderland in midweek. He came close with a cracking header halfway through the first half, had a shot well saved by keeper Mark Beeney and then headed City into the lead mid-way through the second half. The reason for this urgency surely isn't just a desire to make an impression on Maidstone who Cooper left earlier in the season, so it is puzzling that since this all action display, Coops has been extremely disappointing.

Mark Gall, scorer of Maidstone's winner in the league encounter, was thankfully far less dangerous this time and he wasted Maidstone's best chance just before the interval. This was their only real scoring opportunity until Cooper's goal which, as with Dartford three weeks previously, was the sign for the homesters to attck with more purpose.

Steve Butler's shot was smothered by Kevin Miller, but some of the away contingent layed the blame in Miller's court for the equaliser. Butler played the ball inside to Karl Elsey and his drive left the City keeper stranded. How Miller could be blamed seems inconceivable to me as you couldn't have wished to see a better placed shot, though one at the other end wouldn't have gone amiss!
